Sushi..Healthy?

But if you are sticking to the Sashimi more than the rice based pieces then have some seaweed salad and some edamame that is good meal!
Here in the islands is a local favorite called “Poke”, pronounced “Poke” (as in poke someone with a stick) and “Eh” (as in "Eh, you da kine eh?-- haha, j/k).

There’s no rice in it, usually it’s consumed as an appetizer or party food (ie: Beer Accompaniment). It’s Raw Ahi, Aku, Swordfish or Octopus Cubes, seaweed, ground up kukui nut, green onion, soy sauce, mixed together somewhat like a cold salad.

Also, sashimi (no rice) is a favorite. If you bring it to a party, 1. You’re the hero and 2. It’s the first thing to go. And traditionally, many people have it during their New Year’s celebrations. Personally on New Year’s, I bring Hamachi sashimi, which is rich in fish oils and a very rich form of Tuna Sashimi and my fave. You have to stand in long lines at the fish market to get sashimi for New Year’s, though.

Pretty!

Strange question. Sushi is either just fish, fish and white rice, or lightly-fried fish and white rice. If you don’t know whether fish or a fish/rice combination is “healthy,” then you have serious problems!

Sushi actually refers to the rice. Just plain raw fish is sashimi. Sushi doesn’t necessarily include raw fish.

When I was in Japan I got to eat sashimi right off the side of a japanese snapper, about 1/2 way through it started twitching and moving. Apparently the chefs only stunned/pithed/knocked out (whatever) the fish before they sliced it up and served it to us. They showed us the heart was still beating when we were done.

Oddly I would have imagined myself being a little more creeped out by eating a living animal. Live and learn.
That’s freaking awesome I wanna try that some day.

To a large extent, yes. At least you need to KNOW about foods that aren’t corn-fed. And you need not say, “FUCK THAT!” every time someone eats something outside of your comfort zone - again, unless you want to be viewed as plebian scum.

You’re still young, though, so you have time to improve. Otherwise, you are indeed doomed to a life at the bottom of the totem pole.

But, hey, you’ll have big guns and will be able to brag about eating beef, so SCREW IT, man!

Funnily enough, I don’t think I will ever leave Kansas, maybe at most to go to missouri. Most people in Kansas do say “fuck that” whenever someone is eating something out of their comfort zone. Even rich people in Kansas prefer beef.

So, my choice of foods may make me “plebian scum” in california, but I would do ok in Kansas. It is cool though, most people in Kansas assume people from california is a might bit queer anyhow.

LOL. Fair enough, man. Seriously, I really do like your response. First, it’s candid and unapologetic. Second, it reminds me why I left the Midwest - and never looked back!

FUCK IM SO JEALOUS!!!

If you are ever in Santa Barbara, you must go to Arigato. By far the best fish, sauces, service, etc. I will be there in approximately 8 hours!

If price is not that much of a concern try Sakana in Montecito (10 min away) they have some high end rolls that are well worth the cash.
Thanks! Just ate at Sakana and had a fabulous meal. Seaweed salad, a spicy tuna hand roll and jalepeno yellowtail and tuna sashimi. The yellowtail was some of the best I’ve eaten. Think I’ll be going back tomorrow for lunch! YUMMY!

 1. Japanese food is generally awesome all around. Of course I never really ate it until I started dating a Japanese girl.

 2. Natto is vile. Vile. Smells bad, tastes worse. Uni (sea urchin) is the food of the gods.

 3. Sashimi grade fish is so good it’s unreal. I’ve really learned to appreciate the subtle flavors. I ate at one of the best Japanese places in NYC tonight (Sugiyama) and I’m very happy right now.

 4. You folks on the West Coast/Pacific are lucky. The fish seems better over there – I had some of the best sushi in my life in San Diego.
