It will have a negative effect, but if you enjoy those things then keep doing it.

I am 6ft4 and trying to get into bodybuilding and away from my sports background. Would continuing sport (tennis and rugby) and other activities (yoga and pilates) have a negative effect on muscle gains or would it be beneficial to building muscle (being a tall bloke)?[/quote]
If you want to gain muscle, calories in > calories out. As long as you’re offsetting your energy expenditure with more food, and not letting your sports get in the way of your gym recovery time, I don’t see a problem. Plenty of rugby players look more muscular than 90% of the guys at most gyms I’ve been to…
Being tall is it’s own reward.

Seriously. Having even a decent muscular frame makes you look that much bigger. My older brother is probably 6 inches shorter than me, and has probably 60 lbs on my bench, but everyone says I look like the big guy in the family ![]()
I just train…I’m a little over 6’2 myself, closer to 6’3, but can’t change that…so I train like everyone else that is at a level that I want to achieve, and anyways…a filled out tall dude is a more powerful presence than a filled out short dude…

What do you mean “but can’t change that”? You would want to be shorter if you could?

No, I embrace being tall, prefer it, and think unless your like 6’5 kind of tall, you really shouldn’t have to train different than someone 5 inches shorter.
How could you assume I’d want to be shorter with the last comment in my post?

Because you brought up that you couldn’t change your height. Usually people shrug off and accept a negative quality in that manner, like 'I’m short, nothing I can do about that".

Well I love being tall.
Me, too. I grew 10 inches taller from 9th to 12th grade. I wouldn’t trade 1 inch for 50 lbs of muscle.
Does anyone experience knee pain when doing the hack squat (machine)?
I suspect the machine isn’t properly configured to accommodate someone of not-average height.

Yes, I do (6’2’'). Don’t know why, though, but whenever I’ve added hack squats to leg day after about 4 weeks or so my knees wear out.

Not really, but I get horrible knee pain doing actual hack squats with a barbell.

Hack squat machine feels weird and bothers my knees. I do like a leg sled though, plate loaded machine that is more parallel to the ground. 6’2".
i get pretty bad knee pain doing any kind of machine leg movement. I have to stick to the basics, squats, lunges and deadlifts
I read an article on Men’s Health that said for tall guys throw in some heavy DB step ups. I tried them and youget a good burn without any knee pain Im 6’2 plus you work your forearms and core

So that’s what I’ve been missing in my quest for 30+ inch legs.

See, you should have renewed you subscription…
Just found this thread through google and I had to register!
I’m 6"4 and ~187lbs, I began lifting at 21 and was on a 3day split for a year, was doing mostly leg presses on leg day and it dig wonders for my legs.
6 years and a depression later, I’m back at the gym, now I am doing freeweight on a program like SS and had trouble with squats, it wasnt developping my quads correctly. I’m trying out zercher squats right now, I like it quite a lot but after reading this thread I’m thinking about going back to leg press and hack squat again. I remember at 21 I used to love hacksquat, It made my legs so powerful, when I was running I felt like my legs were pushing the floor like sangoku ahah
