First, I’d like to point out that I am in no means trying to put strongman theories in the powerlifting forum, I just thought the answers I’d get here would be better suited towards my personal goals than if I put this in the strongman forum. Second and finally, does anyone know if loaded carries are a good exercise to add to powerlifting training?
I’m hoping this isn’t a stupid question like someone asking if you should use a weight gainer and fat burner at the same time, but seriously, I don’t have what I would consider a vast amount of knowledge on strongman or powerlifting but I do get the basics of both and I was just wondering if there was a beneficial carryover between the 2, loaded carries specifically.
I find loaded carries are good for core stability, there may be very few things better so yes there are things that do have carryover for sure. I enjoy farmer walks for teaching myself to stay a bit tighter and more retracted in my scapulae as well as building a thicker back.
Basic human movements: Squat, push, pull, carry. Couldn’t hurt adding in something you’re not doing. Most successful powerlifters talk about using that stuff in some form or another.
Thanks guys, I was sure a lot of stuff had potential to carryover, especially anything involving grip and back strength, my concern (for lack of a better word) with the loaded carries is the variations that don’t directly hit grip and forearms. Like tossing a dufflebag full of rocks over your shoulders (the good quality, dense, semi-boulder style rocks) will that give you the same type of work heavy farmers can give?
Is this from the “Secrets of Loaded Carries” article? I have it in my favorites but I’ve only read it once so I may have missed some of his key ideas, but this is awesome. Thanks for the responses guys, hearing from people that practice it is different than reading about it so I appreciate the perspectives.
