Stretching For the ATG Squat

When I try to put my knees in my armpits while lowering down to the bottom of the squat position (without weights) I can’t put my heels on the ground. Every I do my leg workout I always let some weight sit on my calves on the seated calf machine to try to get them to stretch out so I have more mobility there but that doesn’t seem to be helping. I also do your typical leg stretching afterwards but I honestly don’t seem to be progressing.

I want to be able to do non smith machine atg squats without having a board to elevate my heels so how else should I be stretching to get there?

watch all these, practice the stretches daily and exercises.

Your probably not squatting correctly, or you have tight hips. It wont take too long squatting is a very natural position, you’ll get the hang of it.

Also another thing its hard to squat perfectly without weight-at least for me- I usually have to stick my hands out in order to have good position. The bar helps a lot with balance.

  • that guy in youtube squats to slow and he stops you cant stop at any time if want max results body must move all the time allsow if you use weights u must wear a belt and hawe a partner behind you but thats just what i recomend to do ,do what ever suits you …

I wouldn’t use a belt unless I was going for a new PR. Training with a belt consistently will (as far as I know) remove the load from a lot of small stabilizers, which isn’t very good in the long run.

I would train without and max with a belt.

I am the least flexible guy I know but I can squat ATG no problem. Stretching had nothing to do with it.

It is all in learning to squat and spending time in the squat position.

x2. If you want to learn how to squat…squat. That said, Boris Bachman(the squat rx guy) has tons of good info on his blog and in his videos.

yeas you are right it takes presure of back but if your normal workout is whith from 280paunds and more you must use a belt besouse other wise you spine can get serious injury , of course if we are tolking about newbie whu works whith empty frame when he squats go ahed and squat withaut a belt … sow its your call how you squat

Watch this Dan John video:

He shows how to get into your perfect (natural) squat postition, as well as some other stuff.

He is an amazing teacher and I recommend his DVD’s as well.

Err, your form has to be pretty bad for you to get serious spinal injuries from squatting/deadlifting over 280lbs without a belt.

Ah well, that’s just my opinion, do whatever works for you.

1: im not talking about my form

2: if you get even a little trauma at 15-20 years you can forget about somthing more then being a ametour bodybuilder becouse with out squat you body cant grow normal…

3: sorry but i didint understand your coment Zund 280 is not sow bad to squat or dead lift its not pro weight but for avrage person who comes to gym its good weight to train

4 : in this topick im tolking about newbies or thoses peaple who dosint live in gym

5 : its my opinion if you think other wise its fine with me

Weight has nothing to do with it, if your form is bad you will hurt yourself. Doesn’t matter if its 135lbs or 600lbs. If you have good form with the weight you will not hurt yourself, its when new trainers are trying to do more weight then they can do is when they hurt themselves.

Some of things that worked for me…

  1. Goblet Squats
Its in one of those youtube videos on squatrx. The weight helped to get me down, kinda like a loaded stretch, and it helped counterbalance too so I wouldn’t lose my arch and let my back go into flexion.

  2. Doorway squats
Just squat in a doorway and use the door to keep your back straight. I did these about 6 times a day, at work, at home, and I still do them to warm up if I’m tight using the power rack to hold myself up. It’s basically this:

  3. Squat
Like Shizen said, the weight helped to get me down and it makes it easier to balance and keep good form.

3*) 1-Arm DB OH Squats
These are star because you probably shouldn’t even bother with them until you can squat good and deep. I’ve been working these lately just because they get my hips nice and loose, and help my shoulder flexibility too.

Heres another video w/ some more drills:

Just watched the movie, that was awesome. Plus a fellow T-Nation member in the group

What made you decide on the arbitrary number of 280 lbs?

Oh, and please, lrn 2 spel frend.

huh 280 is a first number that came to my head thinking about average person who squats , if you want lest say 330 or 180 what ever float your boat , i just wanted that if a newguy will read this he would understand he cant look what other ( Gym veterans ) do for example squat without belt if he use wheights …

its nothing shameful to use it(belt) ,even pros use them in almost all of theyr workouts … omg sorry if i wrote to much , i just wanted to say no matter the weight you must always protect your body if you wont to still workout when your 60 years  and im real sorry for my poor spelling
