this should make some of you older guys real happy, I read that the average college male can bench 205lb’s(1 rep max). and that is inc. all of the athletes in college.generaly I think 1.5x bdwt. bench pretty damn good, and 2 x’s bdwt is real strong. squat and dead 2x’s is real good and 3x’s bdwt is real strong. oh yea, and 1 arm chins for males is REAL strong
it is relative to your height. If you want me to prove this i will.
Midnight thanks for the numbers. What would be considered world class strong for the olmpic lifts like the Snatch, and clean and jerk.
First of all, it is important to note that the smaller individual (read: lighter and shorter-limbed) will always have the propensity to develop greater relative strength than his longer-limbed and heavier brethren.
The reason has to do with both leverage and the fact that the maximum force a muscle can produce through contraction is proportional to its cross sectional area. However the mass of a muscle is proportional to its volume. Therefore as you put on muscle mass, your strength does not increase at the same rate.
Oh yeah, the world records for the snatch are 212.5 kg and for the clean and jerk it is 262.5 kg. This translates to roughly 470 lbs and 580 lbs. Keep in mind this is for the heaviest lifters (105+ kg). Sad to say no Americans have ever come close to these numbers.
Wow, Shawn W. that’s extremely impressive. I am rather awestruck, considering you nearly bested the current collegiate nat’ record set by P.J. Chovanec in March of this year. Your total is about 1845 and his is just a few lbs ahead of yours at 1884. You’re lighter than him too! I’d give it a shot ^_~
awsome! I only hope at 65 I’m close to where you are now (who knows I’m 31 now and by then you’ll only be 99 so I still may be chaseing you!!) the 16 chins is GREAT and the 200 @ 155 is also quite impressive, like I said college males average max is 205 and I bet most could not come close to 16 chins!!! much props!!! p.s. keep getting stronger so I’ll have something to shoot for when I get to adulthood! hetyey225
I’m 17 5’9" 170 lbs (all natural) with a bench of 295 a squat of 400 even and a dead lift of over 405 never gone higher but pulled that easily.
WSU/Midnight: here’s a thought, 1.5xBW bench, 2xBW Squat, 2.5xBW Dead for openers, but then you’ve also got to go sub-60 seconds in a 400 meter run…thoughts? These get you in the game, but we can always tweak up the goals.
Good Post. Personally, I like strength. I’, only 6’, 150-155, ripped to shreds, bench 230-235, squat 315, dead don’t know, do 16 slow perfect chins. These aren’t numbers to revere but I feel they’re defintely okay, and I’m constantly working to improve them. By summer’s end, my goal is to bench 250-260, Squat 350, and do 30 chins: possible. I personally feel myself weak and cringe at the superhuman nature of some of T-Mag’s posters benching 450, deadlifting in the 600’s and squatting the likes, and the truth is that I AM weak. I feel that benching twice one’s bodyweight is an accomplishment of strength, and squatting at least 2.5X the bodyweight is also showing good strength. Hard work and intensity of desire + caffeine = strength. Thanks for listening and keep on.
Shawn W., you are STRONG, man.
