Strength Training Starts Monday

Damn i just finished my first “Starting Strength” session and wow…what a wimpy workout. Sure, ive heard this yield very good results but its just hard to believe it. I love it its quick and easy, it took me only about 35-40 mins. Did any of you ever use to do this program if so what did you think of it?
LOL No really, that is too funny. Time spent does not equate to manly/wimpy. I’m sure you know this. Dan John has several short programs that would leave you hurling in a matter of minutes. You should not be judging by one workout. It’s takes a week to find the appropriate working weight. I have used it in the past, and am currently using it right now. My shirt is always soaked and I’m huffing at the end of it. I’m not a wimp and this is no wimpy program.

I’m sorry man. I have to disagree and I’m sure you will agree with my disagreeing.

simple - yes

easy - no

effective - yes

Oh yeah i was adding weight to the point where completing the 5 reps were challenging. What i ment by wimpy was that it was so short. However I still don’t know if if shoud stick to the 3x5 or change to the 5x5.
The first few weeks aren’t too hard. But you will be adding weight onto the bar every single workout. It will always stay simple, but it will become harder.

I been attending this same gym for a few weeks and one of the regulars there was observing what I was doing and he walked up to me today when i was in the suana warming up,convo went like this.we joked around a bit hes a really nice guy

him:what you do out there.
me: just a simple 5x5 why whats up
him:you do like 3 diff lifts whats up with that
me:so dont talk shit dude
him:naw im not talkin shit just you arent doing much
me:you spend time out there yet or you just gettin here
him:naw im just gettin in why whats up
me:follow what I do then let me know whats up after that ok
him:whatever

after 30 mins he had a huge smile on his face and was huffing like he just ran from the cops and dripping wet.
now this guy is in good shape and I guess he spends like 3-4 hours a day in the gym

I told him where to look for this program and hes gonna try it a while see how it works

the trainers at my gym are all about 12x3 with alot of targeted work and thats what hes been doing for several years now and the first day he tried the 5x5 I was doing with my push, pull, squat he was impressed.
and also I just got myself a training partner cause hes there same time I am usually

do not underestimate this at all its great just do it give it the whole 8 weeks or so I promise you wont be disapointed

I’m doing 3x5, should i switch to 5x5 …darn it…i dont know…help me.

Stick with the program for a few weeks, and follow the progression. It’s retarded to jump from program to program without seeing what works. If you aren’t making good gains after 4 weeks, then switch. Otherwise, you’ll have plenty of time to do a 5x5 workout after you’ve finished Rippetoe.

Do the 3x5 for now. When progress fails after a few months, then you can look into 5x5.

yup one thing at a time follow through with what your doing first.
if you hop around it may actually hurt your progress

Alright i’ll just stick to the 3x5. Today i did power cleans for the first time in my life, I was surprised to find out that it isn’t as hard as complex as i feared it would be. I did my 3x5 with the 135 lb after warm-ups, I lost my balance…2 or 3 times lol. Shit but the bar was hitting the bones that are right on top of the chest muscle and I’m assuming that that’s not supposed to happen and it’s a little ache now when i touch it.

My wrist are also feeling a little pain when i flex them i guess because I was grabbing the bar the wrong way when it was on my chest. than that everything else was ok for being the first time.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that about everything, at some point, will ache and be sore. Joints will be especially susceptible to pain/ache/sore. Take some fish oil … like Flameout.

The bar is hitting the bones above your chest. That would be the clavicles. Your swing may be a little too aggressive, or you just don’t have enough meat on your bones to act as padding.

i just took a look at my clavicles today and theyr all bruised up. I’ll just wrap a towel around the bar for next time. This threat is getting too long for me i’m gonna start a new one.

Easy was a comparative term, I guess. It’s easier than, say, beast training or doggcrap training. There are only a small handful of exercises to remember, so, for a beginner, it’s also easy on that level.

Is it a walk in the park? HELL NO. The lifts themselves should NOT be easy. If they are, you’re only cheating yourself.

I guess that’s more or less what I meant when I said “easy.”

Exactly. The problem is that a lot of beginners are doing Rippetoe and complaining that its easy because there are ‘only’ three exercises each workout, and ‘only’ three days a week. It ‘only’ takes 45 minutes.

Heh… I’ve got a bruise on my right clavicle from powercleaning on Wednesday. And I HAVE meat on my bones. That shit never goes away.

Good luck wrapping the towel around it.
