Will everyone please stop pretending that it does not say BODYBUILDING in big letters right up there…

Do you guys understand that there IS a strength sports forum…?

We don’t go over there to talk about feeling the pump and dieting for contest condition, so why do you guys come over here and constantly plug powerlifting and athletic training?

It gets old.

Wow, you really put us in our place didn’t you, princess?

I agree with him. No other forum gets this much cross contamination. There are people here with 11" forearms who claim they aren’t interested in hypertrophy…yet they post in the BODYBUILDING FORUM complaining that their forearms are too small and look funny.

WHY do people do this?

Because many people are under the misguided impression that anything involving the lifting of weights is bodybuilding.
YEAH! that IS the problem. It pisses me off no end… it is insulting apart from anything, it is like a basketball player going into a netball forum and claiming to know all about the sport because they are both ball games.

BOLLOCKS!

Of course hypertrophy is related to strength training, but there is a clear difference. You can get bigger using maximum loads. One aids the other, but you can’t get maximum strength gains using loads like 75% (like you use for mainly hypertrophy). Of course you get strong(er), but not as strong as using maximum loads.

Strength training is neurological - the nervous system learns to recruit more of the muscle in order to lift more. So your strength gains are mainly due to nervous system response, not muscle growth.

Hypertrophy training (higher volume) doesn’t require maximum loads (anywhere from about 70-85% RM). Hypertrophy mainly causes slight strength gains via muscle growth.

Doing purely strength training while bodybuilding aids hypertrophy due to the body recruiting more muscle with strength gains.

Doing a 5-10 rep range is a good way to meet in the middle I know (i.e. to “order strength with my hypertrophy”)…but right now I’m experimenting with doing 3 rep sets plus 8-10 rep sets in same week to see if better results can be gained (i.e. the far end of the spectrum of both hypertrophy and strength)…only time will tell. I could do this is the same workout but I feel I’ll be better able to manage fatigue and track progress this way.

just out of curiosity, why do people get so pathetic when Professor X makes a post? He didn’t say anything different from what mr popular said, but suddenly mr angry pants became mr subservient pants.
I’m guessing you’re referring to me there. If that’s the case, I’ll answer you, if not just stop reading.

First of all, it was X’s post that pissed me off the most because I felt like he didn’t read my content in the thread when he posted and that pisses me off . He then wrote back that he wasn’t singling me out when he posted his comments. Not an appology but a clarification.

Two, X has reached a certain level of respect with me. He tells it like it is and though I may disagree sometimes (rarely at all now), he’s giving you his opinion without the little prick attitude that other posters (not mentioning names) use with thier retorts.

Ya know how your best friend can talk to you a certain way and it’s ok but a total douchebag stranger can’t?

Yeah, it’s like that.

If it hurts someones feelings that some guys can say whatever they want and others aren’t able get away with it, too fucking bad, that’s life. Those are the rewards for longevity and a long history of contribution to the site.

Bitter much?

Are you saying he didn’t?

Why do you or anyone else care what people think about me?

Along with that line of questioning, why do you or anybody else care about what anybody else or I think about you?

I have just noticed that people will seem to have strong convictions, to the point of insulting somebody, but then you make a comment that doesn’t necessarily say anything new, and people completely drop their argument. I just don’t understand the lack of conviction. Great, you’ve been around for a while, and you’re certainly in good shape. I would take advice from you, no doubt. But why put an opinion out there if you don’t truly believe in it?

It’s not my place to speak for anyone but I have a free moment here…

Not that I’d hold my breath for an answer to that question but I’ll just give a bit of serious (ie; friendly, not sarcastic) advice: Don’t accuse people of doing things without 1) naming the person you’re calling out and 2) quoting examples of exactly what you’re talking about.

What the fuck is even being discussed anymore? haha

Prof X: I don’t know what you mean I was just making a joke.

And derek: you seem to have this compelling urge to break every conversation down into the smallest microcosms of discussion and detail.

Strength and Hypertrophy in the same week? The only way they wouldn’t be in the same week is if you weren’t eating enough food to gain weight but were still training.

Let this thread die please. haha

Now THAT I like!

Is this still the bodybuilding section where 200lb+ hardcore BBs post? Cause I thought I’d accidentally come across the “PMS T-vixen Bitch Match” forum lol…

Anyway, yeah Mr. Popular, I agree that while training for size it all depends on diet as to whether you gain size with the strength.

The point of me making this post though was to ask whether doing high reps would pretty much un-do the strength gains (e.g. 3-5 reps Mon, 8-10 reps Thu)? You know, going as high as 95% RM is the best way for big jumps in strength, but not much in the way of hypertrophy. With BB, if you want decent strength gains and decent size gains, you have to meet somewhere in the middle (e.g. 85% RM).

Purely strength/power = Under 5 reps (example)
Purely hypertrophy = 10+ reps

I’m just experimenting (not just discussing) and seeing whether it’s worth me making a division/gap and prioritizing purely strength and purely and hypertrophy…as apposed to just combining them both in the same workout cycle whereby you use CONSECUTIVE progressive overload (e.g. 5-10 reps). I think I’m making this sound much more complicated than it actually is though lol.

To explain (just an illustration):

Normal progressive overload goes something like this (load remains constant until max reps reached):

Week 1 - 5 reps (Mon) 6 Reps (Thu)
Week 2 - 7 reps (Mon) 8 Reps (Thu)
Week 3 - 10 reps (Mon) 5 Reps (Thu) with increased load

Basically, my method would be something like this:

Week 1 - 3 reps (Mon) 8 reps (Thu)
Week 2 - 4 reps (Mon) 9 reps (Thu)
Week 3 - 5 reps (Mon) 10 reps (Thu)

Then increase loads…

I wonder whether this will make one stronger and bigger since you are not focusing on mainly strength on week 1 while focusing mainly on hypertrophy towards week 3???

That is - you are focusing on both in the same week.

OK, I’ll shut up now lol

How would it un-do any strength gains?

What exactly do you think you mean when you say “purely hypertrophy”?

I think you’re still trying to make too much of a distinction here.
