Straight Leg Deadlift Question

I’ve been doing SLDL’s as a part of my workout for a while now, and I’ve been pretty happy with the results. I’m still not convinced I’m doing anything wrong, but a guy at the gym came up to me the other day and, simply put, told me I was doing them wrong.
I’ll try to describe my form, in hopes that someone will be able to give me some further insight.
When I pull, I keep my legs straight, of course, then I start by sticking out my butt and pulling in my hips, which makes my back arch in a little (concave), which seems fine. I then bend at the hips, keeping my back a little bit arched, and lower the bar down to a reasonable depth, then pulling it back up.
This guy, however, felt that I was putting too much pressure on my lower back, and that, to get better results, I should arch my back out (convex), so that I’d be able to get deeper and work my hamstrings harder.
I tried it his way, but my back started to feel weird, so I stopped for fear of causing injury.

If my descriptions made any sense, my question is what I should do. Am I doing anything wrong normally, because my hamstring always feel like they got worked pretty well afterwards, and my back never hurts?

don’s listen to that idiot. you were doing them the right way. never round your lower back doing an excercise such as the SLDL.

Check these out before you decide.

I would never TRY to round my back during any sort of deadlift, it is good to keep a little arch in your back
The fact that your lower back didn’t fell good doing them with a rounded back pretty much tells you that

For SLDL yeah, keep your arch he’s mistaken.

But it’s not unheard of to bend your low back and go deep. It’s a great way to stretch your low back.

Provided you’re using like 10% of your max.

Thank you everyone, especially “sharetrader”. It seems like he had good intentions, and perhaps his advice would be good, if I had been using less weight.
He did say something about it being ok with little weight…maybe my lift was tiny to him.
