Stop Weights Swinging on Chinups

Depending on the size of the plates you use, they should naturally just sort of go between your legs. Make sure the chain is long enough so it doesn’t hit you in the nuts and you should be all good. I have found that if I consciously try to squeeze my thighs together, it takes away form my set and I can’t do as many chins, so I just let them hang but put my legs on either side of them and cross my feet behind me. This keeps them steady, provided you do the reps somewhat controlled.

I know you said the problem arises more with heavier weights but if you hold them right I acutally find the more weight you have, the less they swing. Here is my PR for them, though I haven’t done weighted chins from this summer.

i’m not sure what you mean by explosive reps. are you saying that you are coming down fast and then back up fast?? if so, just explode on the concentric portion and then lower under control and come to a dead stop before you explode again.

i recently started doing pullups after not doing them for about 15 years. the main reason i started doing them was because so many people say that guys “my size” can’t do pullups:) anyway, i’ve been doing them for a little over a month now and have moved up to using weight. tonight i used a 45lb plate for my working sets. i believe that pullups should be done under complete control and through a full ROM.

here’s a vid from tonight. i don’t have any problems with the weight swinging:)

looks like your chin never gets over the bar im i wrong ?

yes, look in the mirror behind.

Doesn’t matter anyway…

Found the problems.

  1. I use a peace of crap belt from sports authority meant to hold like max 15 pounds.
  2. The peace of crap belt holds the weight so if you see me from the front you will see the plates from the front not the edge
  3. i was using ten pound plates instead of larger plates. couldn’t even get a 25 on this peace of crap belt

So geuss I am changing the post you guys know where I can get a good chin/dip belt for a good price. One that can hold at least 80-100 pds. Thanks for all the help. Sick vid bruno, also imo maurader’s pulls are fine thats as high as your chin can get on pulls with a grip that wide it gets way higher on chin ups then on pulls especially with a wide grip. not that I do wide grip chins anymore my shoulder can’t handle it.

The belt I am using in that video works GREAT and it is very durable. It’s a Spud belt that you can buy from Elite FTS.

It costs about 40 bucks but it’s quite comfortable compared to some of the leather ones and it will hold 200+ pounds no problem.

Yes his chin does get over the bar, but it really doesn’t matter. In my opinion, the important part is to get a full stretch at the bottom of the rep and pull up high with good posture so you keep the focus on your lats. You see lots of guys keep their arms bent the whole time in an attempt to do more reps or use more weight, and they never get the full stretch on each rep. Likewise, you see lots of guys squirming to get over the bar however possible and they often take the stress of the lats and use mostly arms and shoulders. Mauradermeat keeps his his lats flared and does smooth controlled reps. Textbook in my eyes, not to mention it’s VERY impressive given his size.

K cool thanks bruno belt looks sick awesome 200pb limit hell of a time till I outgrow that all though i’d love to one day price is right too. Thanks for replies everyone.

Looks like a decent belt at a decent price. Another possible solution, if the chain’s just short, is a trip to the hardware store – chain cut to length for a few bucks. Only worth it if you think the current belt will hold up, though.

I’ve tried the backpack thing before, though when I didn’t have a belt, not in conjunction w/one.
