Backpack vs. Dip Belt

Is there anything wrong with using a backpack instead of a dipping belt to add extra weight to chins and dips? (I was thinking maybe back issues at heavy weights?)

its not the back issues, its where the weight is on your body. if its on your back you will be forced into a more upright position, stressing the triceps more and the chest less. it all depends on what you want to emphasize.

branch warren does dips with just a bigass heavy chain draped over his neck, so the weight puts him at an angle that hits the chest

So then couldn’t you wear the backpack on your front for the chest and back for triceps?

I have used a backpack before, however, you will soon not be able to place enough weight in the bag. Find an inexpensive belt to dip with. I currently use a weight belt with a chain, works just fine.

Backpacks are useable only to a certain weight as Kal-El said. Dip-Belts don’t cost a lot, nor do weight-belts with the chain add-on. Actually they are cheaper then a good backpack.

Do you usually bring a dip belt to the gym or is it provided there? Our gym doesn’t provide them.

Does anyone do them with a dumbbell between your feet? It is a bit tough when you start going heavier, but I find it does help place an emphasis on the triceps, and you can drop the dumbbell and pump out a few more if you are trying for failure.

At home, my gym has one. At school, I have to bring my own. The cheapest one I could find online was houseofpain2.com/product-list.html?scid=194&tsccat=145

I use a rope

I think my backpack would be good for about 100lbs, I’ll buy a dipping belt though so I don’t accidentally bust my pack. (I’ve had it for years, kind of has sentimental value.)

I’ve always used a belt. I tried a backpack once and found it different enough that was distracting. Plus it was a lot more work getting the backpack on as compared to using a belt.

YMMV

Fred

i take my own dipping belt to the gym.

Use a belt. If your gym doesn’t have one, buy one. It’s less trouble and you can use more weight. Win-win.

I’ve used an old karate belt and tied a dumbell to it before for chin-ups

I put it around my lower back, with the weight kind of in-between my legs.

worked great - I bet it could hold like 300 pounds too.

LOL, I did this too for a while. Karate belts can hold a lot of weight. I ended up getting burns from he belt as I progressed so now I use a lifting belt with a chain.

hahaha well Ive never really put any weight on it, I just tried it out a few times to see how it worked. I’m going to be adding this in to my routine in a months time or so…if I start getting burns like you did - I’ll make sure to get a belt/chain!
