Awesome man…it looks like I will actually be making the trip down to Norfolk this weekend to visit the little lady so we will both come by and cheer you on! Kill it my man!
Question for you big guy for my upcoming meet. It’s on November 5th (I’m doing push-oull only) with the APA in Steve Pulcinella’s gym right outside of Philly.
Basically. there is this week, next and then the week of the meet left. Last week, I did my openers for the dead and the bench 3 times each (so, for Dead, that was 435x 1,1,1) to make sure I am super comfortable with them. The bench I did paused and did not have any trouble planned opener at 275). What do you think I should do for the remaining period?
This week I was thinking of just working up to the openers again, not straining too much on ME work and not go hard on the accessories. Next week I was not sure whether to do the openers AGAIN along with light accessories, or osmething else? The week of the meet my plan was to go to the gym on Monday and Wednesday and just do some very light benching and deadlifting (like 40% of max for a couple of sets) as well as some auxiliary stuff to keep me loose. Sounds smart?
My planned attempts were 275 for bench, then go for 295 (my max is ugly 300 touch-and-go in the gym) and … we’ll see if there is third haha
For dead I was thining of going 435 - 465 (ive pulled 455 at most in the gym but have gotten 515 with reverse bands, and the 455 was not too bad) and then… go for whatever on 3rd attempt.
Appreciate it big guy! Good luck in your meet!
Good luck today MM! You’ll destroy 1200
Just got back from the SPF Halloween Howl Powerlifting meet at Brute Strength Gym. I’ve had a pretty tough week leading up to the meet. On monday I went into the gym to work up to my opener on deadlift and nothing was going my way. my head has been everywhere but into lifting. As a result, I lost my temper and punched the cinderblock wall in the gym (yeah…I know), leading to a broken hand. I would have just bagged the meet but i had 7 of my guys to handle. A couple of them, this was their first meet. I sucked it up and headed down to the meet. At the last minute I got this stupid idea that maybe if i casted my wrist really high that i would still be able to bench. I went ahead and signed up for bench only having no idea if i would even be able to hold a bar in my hand.
The meet had a great turnout. I actually had a T-Nation member, Greystoke, came up to me having recognized me from the site. we spoke on and off throughout the meet. He’s a very nice guy and just as strong. He definitely rides the line between powerlifting and bodybuilding. (more so than i do). Anyway, there were 4 flights in squat, bench and deadlift. Lots of good lifters, mostly raw. Not many equipped guys.
I was in the fourth flight which allowed me to handle all my guys before i had to start warming up. As i started to warmup, 135 hurt my hand so i knew that it was only going to get worse. i quickly went to 225, then 315. I then went to 405 and as i unracked it i immidiately felt like i was going to be sick the pain was so effing bad. I stopped there and waited until it was time to attempt my opener. I opened with a light 455. Went up easy but all i could focus on was the excruciating pain in my hand. I then went to 485 which was a 5lb PR at my much lighter BW. I got it but as i stood up i immidiately started to feel lightheaded while similtaneously feeling like i was going to throw up. by this point my hand resembled a balloon. you couldn’t even see my knuckles and halway through my second attempt i could feel the fractured bones crack more. All my guys told me to stop there but i still had one more attempt. I went to 490 which gave me a 10lb PR on the day. below i’ll attach that video. after i locked it out i went to get up and started to blackout from the pain. i dont’ remember them getting me off the bench and to the warmup area.
I know it was an idiotic thing to do but i feel a sort of accomplishment having acheived a goal when i thought i would only be a spectator. I was very dissapointed that i wasn’t able to give 700lbs a go on the deadlift. once my hand is healed i’m going to find a meet ASAP to do just that.
All my guys did really well setting many personal PR’s. Time to heal up and get back to it. I ended up getting 1st place in the men’s open raw bench only 259lb class as well as best overall raw bench in the meet.
Damn dude, hate to hear that about your hand…but come on, best overall bench WITH a broken hand? Now you are just being vulgar :-p
Congrats on the PRs for you and all your guys buddy…sounded like an awesome meet…hated I missed it, but I headed out to Tennessee for the Night of the Living Dead instead…good times!

Cool story bro…
No, of course, I’m kidding. How can anyone not be impressed with that?
Congratulations on that bench and condolences on the hand.
What is your recovery plan for the hand?
Wow…
Good luck today MM! You’ll destroy 1200
Meat, you are some kind of crazy. And I mean that in the good way. Take care of that hand.
Man wish I could have been there. That went up pretty damn well considering the circumstances. Hope you got some applebees after all that. ![]()
When they have another push/pull or full competition next year I definitely want to plan to make a trip back to the states and compete with you guys.
Big lifting and I don’t blame you for the attempts. You only get some many chances in life and sometimes you’ve got to deal with some pain to take advantage of them.
Great job.
nice work, dummy
Crazy awesome job on the bench Meat.
Good of you to be there for your guys, and to inspire them with your performance.
Very Impressed with your Manitude, Bro. However…well you know…
Heal Up, If you were healthy you would have been over 500 easy…
Thanks for all the support folks. I went to the emergency room the next day and it is indeed broken. they wanted to cast it but then i wouldn’t be able to press for a long time. I took the week off and hit up overhead press today. I wrapped up the wrist and embraced the glorious pain.
Brute Strength Gym is going to be putting on a Bench only meet Feb. 19th at the convention center in Norfolk. They are planning on it being a huge meet. I’m going to go all out on the hypertrophy training and get my BW back up. Hopefully that will help me get my bench up to an all time weight PR. I’ve hit 510 at a BW of 280 in a meet.
overhead press
0x10

this was pretty hard. my shoulders were screaming. wanted to do biceps afterwards but my shoulders wouldn’t stop buring.

my motto is - “pain don’t hurt”
exactly… it’s just pain. you get to our age and something always hurts.
that’s the break. i’ve had it a few times in my lifetime. some from hitting solid objects and some from not so solid objects.
nice work. how big you thinkin gof getting?
