Booyeah! Way to go Meat and Joweeee.
Joweeeeee! 600+ deadlift, awesome job. Very educational and instructive benching vids, amazing how much easier your bench looked at 335 vs. 315.
Meat, another beefy performance. Ho-hum. Those deadlifting vids from the side were great, learned a lot.

thanks hoss. my conventional form is far from perfect but it’s getting better. the chain work we’ve been doing on bench and deads has paid off nicely. all of my attempts felt almost hydralic.

Exactly! All that stuff about where the hips should be, back arch, etc., blah blah, can be so subjective, especially with heavy weights. But the one thing that stands out to me from your side vids is that as your hips are going up, the weights are going up, just like they’re part of the same piston.
Great vids, guys.
Meat: I also pull with high hips. I’ve always heard that a gut works to your advantage in squat and bench but against you in DL. But it doesn’t seem like your bench has suffered at all as a result of weight loss. Or perhaps it’s not really enough to say?
Great meet guys, everything looked good and fast! Joweee, I still owe Jesse Burdick a 515 bench becuase of the same thing when I handed off for him at a IPF meet in PA. I actually let my hands drop down with the bar the first two inches and they red lighted him on that…
Outstanding meet for both of you.
Thanks. ![]()
Hey guys nice vids!! Sounds like it was a good meet for both of you…beastly strong in here…
I had been planning to do it, but my training leading up to it wasn’t going so hot and I got down in my back for a while and decided not to do it…wish I could have seen it though!
Keep it up…

Meat if you have a second I have a quick question, I have been working the front squats allot lately. When I start to get under some load and I an coming out of the bottom I sometimes fall forward and the bar rolls off my shoulders into a Zercher. So I am forced to lighten it up but then I don’t feel like I am working anything. Do you think this is a weak core issue and I should stay with good form until i can get out of the bottom or could it be a setup issue? Also feet placement, narrow or wide?
I know it is hard for you to answer with no video to see how I am setting up but the weight I have to drop to is so ridiculously light I would be embarrassed to post it on the interweb…lolz

Good night. Haven’t done a regular BB standing press in a while. Felt pretty hard. We were doing 5/3/1 but when 155 felt hard I just decided to do 3 sets of 5. It felt pretty good to do some straight sets actually. Since 5/3/1 max takes 90% of actual and im scheduled to do 475 for 5+ on deadlifts, which shouldn’t be too hard… I might just do a 3x5 again with that weight, instead of just doing one set for as many as I can.

a video would definitely helpul. but your problem is definitely very common. it’s very important with a front squat to go up and down as vertical as possible. if you are coming out of the hole and get leaning forward you are definitely going to lose it forward. if you are squatting with a narrow stance it’s really hard to stay upright. i go with a moderately wide stance and i force my knees out really hard on the way down and up. i just drop my ass straight down while at the same time forcing my knees out hard to build tension in the hips. as a result i drop slowly until i can’t get any lower because of the tension. once i hit depth, i reverse the motion and force the knees out hard and go straight up.
it’s all about keep the bar vertical at all times.
Colin you also look fairly tall which can make it harder I think. I have a long torso and I think long femurs so I think it makes it harder to stay upright. I have a real hard time with front squats… but I think it’s also due to a huge lack of flexibility.
I can’t come anywhere near bending over straight and touching my toes. Scott doesn’t look like he could but he can touch his toes pretty easily.
It’s kind of like when I do a one legged squat I lack the flexibility to balance myself but if I put a plate under my heel I can do it pretty easily.
Watching scott do front squats is awesome, he’s really good at staying completely upright. I think he has better proportions for the lift, but I think he is just really good at them from a ton of practice. I have only done them a handful of times so I can’t really say I’ve put in a whole lot of time learning them.
I usually just vouch to do zerchers instead of front squats, haha.
skwatt night. i’ve decided to stick to cambered bar squats as my main movement on squat day. these things tear up the lower back and hams. i used my last heavy set (600) before the comp. to take my percentages off of. i’m also pausing my sets to get as close to the intial pull on a dead.

i got a PM asking me how i wrap my knees for squats. here’s how i do it.
I appreciate the replies guys. I think you are on to something there Joweee. I have the same issues with all my one legged movements. My calves are extremely tight and the foam rolling has helped make me a bit more flexable. Guess I need to be patient it took me 25 years to screw it up I guess I can take 16 weeks to fix it…it just pissed me off to loose it forward when I am concentrating shard to stay back and upright and my weak ass body won’t listen to me…lol

That’s it. Hit that heavish single but stopped there since my low and upper back don’t feel completely recovered from the meet. Legs are sore as hell today though, lol.

This made me chuckle. We call that a ‘left handed compliment’.
Also made me chuckle because I saw one of my upper echelon bosses recently (I see him once or so a year). He’s a runner and always turns conversation toward my size, health, and lifting.
He was convinced a guy my size couldn’t be flexible and didn’t believe I could touch my toes. So, right there in 3 piece suit I bent over and put my palms on the floor straight legged (thank you SLDL’s).
Felt nice.
Full disclosure: There’s a whole swath of my back I can’t touch, so my $3 back scratcher has been a blessing.

i call it a back handed compliment, sort of like- “you sure don’t sweat much for a fat guy”
but yeah, i can put my palms on the floor with straight legs as well. i think my flexibility came from years of doing construction and building floors and putting down flooring. last summer i put hard wood floors in my house and it brought back memories.
you would think with joweee’s monkey arms he would be able to touch his toes.
don’t get me started on all the different areas of my body i can’t reach. thank god for shower back scrubbers.
i can touch all the important areas though…
