keep up the good work man.

Decided to really go after it tonight…

worked up to 245x2, 265x1 (5 lbs pr), 225x4 (toast) and 185x10

I have pretty much trained the press as a Bench Press assistance day for the last year, so glad to get re-motivated…

How are you guys programming your pressing?

Solidkhalid, keep after it. Still moving up!

Jerkwad, congrats on the PR!

Personally, I have a separate shoulder day. There is no way I can train MP properly after my bench. Too much fatigue. Of course, I am not concentrating on bench.
Right now I am doing 5x5 on MP. But I have done 5/3/1. Also, I spent a good deal of time just going heavy and feeling it as I went.
The heavy singles and doubles work for me, for a short time. Then I start going backwards. So, I figured I would give the 5x5 a try. Once it dries up, I am not sure. But there will likely be some heavy singles, doubles and triples mixed in. I need to feel the heavier weight again.

Congrats on the PR Jerkwad. At this point my pressing takes a back seat to the bench. Since I also approach it as a assistance exercise for the bench. If I wasn’t competing in power lifting I would focus most of my energy towards it since I appreciate a good overhead press over a good bench 9 out of 10 times.
Im pretty much applying 5/3/1 scheme to it with another secondary exercise to work the shoulders.

Jerkwads PR really fired me up. Only 55 more pounds until I reach man hood status. OK ,fine the set was ugly.

All I see is a white box. Please don’t tell me I have to reach manhood before I can actually see it! I might never get there!

Ha! I rememebred to post here!

230x5x5

Set 1

Set 3 - toughest set…besides the next one.

Set 5 - easiest set…besides the 1st.

235# is really starting to look daunting.

Thanks man. And back at ya.

225x3,3,3,3,5…

Strick, 230x5x5 is impressive… just curious, what is your 1RM?

Any of you guys ever read the Bill Starr article on Rippitoe’s site from last year re: pressing? (http://startingstrength.com/articles/stronger_press_starr.pdf) He talks about programming for the press and using weighted dips as primary assistance exercise… not sure if any of you guys had ever read it and had any thoughts about it?

I haven’t read that. Thanks for the link. I will read it in the morning…when I should be working.

My best ever was in the latter half of last year. I hit 275#. And it was an all out grinder…profanity included.

I started to lose ground on bench and MP after that. So I backed off and ended up on this 5x5 cycle. I think I am stronger, over reps, from it. I don’t know that it has helped my 1RM, though. I think I need more work closer to max.
We shall see.

So it seems like I haven’t OHP in forever, so yesterday I had a mini impromptu OHP/clean ‘n’ jerk session. Ultimately I decided to clean 185 and strict press it up, rather easily. Getting 185 slapped a big 'ole smile on my face real quick

Now to slowly inch my way up to the level of you guys haha.

I read it before. Ill say this , there no way in hell that I would ever contradict what Bill Starr says… So yeah ,I would say dips as a primary assistance exercise is a good choice. But…I know some guys as they get older tend to run into trouble doing them do to shoulder health issues . So if you can do them without any problems my Opinion would be do them.
