Squat Shoe Recommendations

It is time for a new pair of squat shoes. I squat raw, low bar, pretty narrow stance. Any recommendations?

Adidas weightlifting shoes are quite popular. I just ordered a pair from Dynamic Fitness. They have the older models on sale right now.

I like my vibram 5 fingers.

Pendlay’s - they’re going out of production soon so get some if you want them.

I don’t like SAFE’s quite as much (I think Safe was bought out recently by titan iirc) but they’re not a bad show and a lot of the guys I train with use them.

One vote against Pendlays. They are poor quality. Might as well invest in shoes that will last.

I heard that Rogue makes good squat shoes, but have been unable to find a vendor that has them in stock.

I like my Safe shoes, but they don’t have a whole lot of heel. Depending on how narrow you are, you might want something with more of a heel, like the olympic shoes.

Rogue fitness carries the adidas adipower, the nike romaleo and the Do-Win which are all excellent shoes to squat in. I have the nike romaleo and they are seriously awesome. You can’t go wrong with Rogue Fitness I bought a lot of stuff (bar/bumpers, stand, shoes, chalk…) from them and the customer service is really good.

Yes, the Romaleos are badass.

I bought the cheapest pair of Adidas oly shoes (100usd) and they work great for me, I squat oly style though.

Romaleo 2s just came out. They are expensive and amazing.

Chuck Taylors? Someone had to say it.

I have these too and they’re really nice:

I’m trying to go wider now so I’m using chucks instead. I use the VS for front squats though.

You know better my friend, you know better

I can vouch for the Do-Win Rogue shoes. I’ve abused them for over a year and they’re good as new.

The Nikes, from what I’ve seen and been told around my gym, fall apart after some time. A lot faster than the Do-Wins.

Since you squat “low bar” the last thing you need is a heel lift.

Anything with a thin hard sole, or just a thin sole. Chucks, Asics (wresting), whatever. And make sure there is enough room for ankle flexion, so maybe tie them without using the top holes.

NOT oly lifting shoes or their extremely expensive knock offs (Nike etc).

Think about it. A low bar will make you lean forward a bit, adding a heel will cause all sorts of balance and bar motion issues.

I don’t think this is true. Shitty squat form leads to instability issues. I think this comment would be best applied after seeing the OP squatting. Low bar and narrow stance are relative terms. I’ve seen plenty of “low bar” lifters wobbling all over the place in Chucks.

asics tai chi working well for me

Texican and Triceptaurus - you are mistaken. The Nikes are high quality. Considerably more so than Do-Wins.

This is just what I’ve been told from guys who have blown out a few.

For the price, the Do-Wins are great.

What do you dislike about the Safe’s? Not to hijack, but I’ve been curious for a while what people thought about powerlifting style squat shoes such as Safe, Inzer, and Crain?
