Powerlifting Shoes for Squats and Deads

Hi,

Today I finally got called out for doing my squats and deadlifts in my socks, so now I need to get some shoes…all I have are very soft running shoes.

I want to get a wooden-raised platform shoe for squat ( I squat high bar with narrow stance) and I believe these type of shoes will help with that.

What about deadlfits though? For that I would want something as simple, flat, and close to the floor as possible…

any good recommendations? I will likely have to go online for this as there are really no good sport retailers in my area

Bro for deadlifts just search wrestling shoes kn google you will get a ton of results. For squats go to roguefitness snd get their do-wins or if you have the cash hey nike romaleos 2 or the adidas ones.

Or just do chuck taylors and stick 5 lb plates under your heels lol

Squat : Adidas Adipower or Nike Romaleos or Pendlay 2013 or Rogue Do-wins…
Deadlift : Slippers from Titan Support.

I bought a cheap pair of wrestling shoes (Asics matflex 3) and got the rogue do-wins. They’ve worked just fine.

I bought the Adipowers. I spent about 3 months lifting with a 5lbs plate under my heal to see if they were going to help. I saved my allowance and pulled the trigger a few weeks ago and I have to say, Im pretty happy with them. I still do my competition style deadlifts in my Chucks, but Ive done alot of my accesory pulling in my Adi’s, just to make things harder.

Hookgrip is doing a massive sale on some amazing oly shoes for squatting. In fact I should probably post this in the Oly section lol.

Haha that’s a bit expensive for me, maybe in a few years when I can justify spending that much lol

Love my chucks for deadlifts. But I don’t see anything wrong with pulling in your socks if that works well for you and you want to save $40-$50.

I bought a pair of Adipowers about 9 months ago. Costly, but worth it. I squat more weight in Chucks and with a wider stance, but I use the Adipowers quite a bit to do a narrow stance ATG squat as a variation, and I have zero complaints about the Adipowers as far as an Oly shoe goes.

Get Adidas Powerlift or Powerlift 2.0. They are like $80-90 and are a better introductory shoe for someone not fully commited to oly shoes. If you like those, then save up and get the adipowers or romaleos or whatever.

The heel of the original Adidas Powerlift shoes were reported to ‘give’ at weights over 140 kg. I don’t know about the newer models but would expect the same result as they are more designed for crossfitters than serious lifters. Also, the front portion of these shoes flexes at lighter loads. For what it’s worth, I have the Adidas adiStars and have been very happy with them. I got them for $159 and they all well worth the price. The Adidas Power Perfect II’s are supposed to be great and cost about $119. I think I’ve seen video of Dan Green squatting in these.

For deads, a flat and inexpensive shoe is great. I have both Converse Chuck Taylors and the cheaper One Star version. I actually prefer the One Stars for some reason. Wrestling and skate shoes are supposed to be great as well.

I think there is a thread in the bigger stronger leaner forum with good information. I remember posting about this before.

I’ve never worn raised heel shoes, but I squat high bar medium stance and have squatted on a plate or ramp before. If you’ve ever done it before you probably know squatting feels better with a raise…

Other than that I can say that even chucks make a good difference. Here’s how I would rank footwear

Soft/air soles < barefoot < hard sole sneakers < chucks < weightlifting shoes

Basically, you’ll want something which allows you to push out on the shoe, has a hard sole, and also laces up tightly.

Buy a good pair of shoes and don’t look back. I’d rather lift with correct footwear and no belt than a belt and shoes which are poor for lifting.

I don’t see anything wrong with it either, but the gym staff does.
I’m going to go with a pair of adidas weighlifting shoes and chucks for deadlifts…

Only issue now is that I squat and deadlift on the same day (on 1 of 3 of my workouts)…I dunno If I want to carry around 2 pairs of shoes lol, the chucks would be good for squats I’m sure

I agree the Powerlifts are not the best, but I frequently squatted over 140kg in mine and I never had an issue. The adipowers feel a lot better, I will admit, but most can’t stomach a $200 investment on the first shot. The power perfect is probably a decent compromise.

Well that’s annoying. They’ve actually told you no pulling in socks?

I feel your pain, clueless gym staffs suck. There’s a small gym directly under my building which I started using once I moved. It’s great in that it’s so close and there is a squat rack and bench which no one uses, and I’ve literally never had to wait for either. But the gym owner stopped me from using chalk (I’m super clean about it, too). Was going to bitch to him and explain the safety hazard, but ultimately decided the gym was just too convenient for me otherwise, and dealing with the inconvenience may even give my grip strength a bit of a boost.

The way I see it you have a few options. First, you cannot compete in socks so stop leaving your foot sweat / funk on the gym floor. Besides, you are doing no one any favors and you don’t look as hardcore as you think  the smiley is me trying to be funny in case your ‘smart ass detector’ isn’t working. I get the whole “as close to the floor” thing but the reality is if you can’t pull a weight wearing a thin sole shoe such as a wrestling shoe or a pair of converse, you got bigger issues. Trust me, the sock thing is in your head ok. If you must pull in socks, get some ballerina slippers like some DL’ers do. I know you don’t see the big deal in it but basically this would be akin to you benching in only your underwear. Yeah it may be comfy and all but we want a few layers between your ass and the bench I want to use, but I digress…

Do you do deficit deads? If so, your close to the floor thing is blown out of the water. Think about it. A 2" deficit dead would be like having a 2" thick shoe lol
I’d consider checking into a wrestling shoe or something with a flat, thin sole. You can even take th insole out of the chucks to make the sole super thin but you’ll get the benefit of ankle support and better traction. Plus you are not walking around the gym mopping up everyones funk and shit with your socks.

Wrestling shoes or pretty much any “skater” shoe works pretty well. I like to pull either in chucks or 5 year old skate shoes I got in high school.

I dunno I have really crummy shoes they are very cheap and unstable…the day I got called out I was supposed to pull a set of 5 but with the shoes that I had to put on I could only get 3, and it was a really good gym day I had just hit a nice squat PR, was expecting easily to hit the 5 reps on deadlifts

These look the business…

I got the Powerlift.2 also, and have never had a problem at 140+kg. I got them because they’re cheap and the heel isn’t really high. So I wouldn’t say it’s a terrible option if money is a concern (and for me it is).

I’ve used Chucks for awhile, but I think they’re overrated as a lifting shoe. I hate squatting in them. When I switched to oly shoes, the difference was night and day. With the oly shoes my feet are so stable and supported they feel like they’re super-glued to the floor. Chucks are okay for deadlifting though, and that’s pretty much all I use them for anymore. Even then, I’m definitely considering switching to slippers for deads.

I dont have much to add, but I think its maybe worth a mention that I really disliked weight training in wrestling shoes, just didnt work for me. Might not be for everyone.

If you look around you can get a pair of chucks for 10-15 bucks.
