I am a shotputter in highschool in the middle of Indoor Track. Today, as I’m off for Christmas break, I was able to get some footage of me throwing. I was just looking for some outside feedback as I’m not an expert or extremely experienced.
I wouldn’t ask it on a primarily bodyuiblding/weightlifting/powerlifting website. If you go to fortifiediron.com there’s a thrower’s forum. If you already know I didn’t say a thing.
Two word to always remember with the spin technique: LOW and SLOW. Positions throughout the movement create power at the end not speed. Going too fast in the back of the ring makes you too high and in bad positions.
Here are my recommendations:
Do wind up 3-4 times in the back before staring the spin. Get your feet set, chest up, butt down take easy wind and lead with your low and wide right leg. Keep your chest up and butt down while leading the throw with that right leg. You are diving into the ring with your left shoulder while leaving the right leg back. When you land in the power position, chest up, butt down with the hips leading the shoulders for the throw. Hips first, shoulders follow. Head up at the finish.
Below is a video clip of some of the elite shot putters. There are gliders and spinners.
I believe that this is the best board on the internet. It has world champions, coaches as well as collegiate, high school and masters athletes of all levels of ability.
hi
good to see another thrower here. A few things you have good rotational movement but you start unbalanced. There is alot of unnecessary movement or winds before you start.
Simplify it and slow it down. Learn to pivot on the balls of your feet. Your feet dont move as you deliver the shot.
Get yourself a coach or get your folks to buy you a shotput coaching video/dvd on the rotational technqiue and have them watch it til the have an idea so they can coach you. Also it will give you som ideas. Good luck

there is lots of stuff here to download
i suggest looking at Reece Hoffa or Rugter Smith as their techniques are pretty good.
Reece is amazing for a small guy.
Both have websites www.rutgersmith.com
Way too much melodramatic nonsense at the beginning. The best throwers I’ve ever seen have maybe one or two twists then they go into it; doing 4 or 5 is unnecessary.
Slow down. You lose balance after the first rotation because you are moving too fast.
Because of you going too fast, you never truly hit the power position, you just whip through it, putting the shot with sheer momentum. I don’t see any real leg drive in your throw, which is where the majority of the power comes from.
you bail left as you throw. this brings the shot off of the neck and costs you significant power.
Some of the sites listed above are good, as well as throwfarther.org, which has great throwing videos.
