I just started shot this year, and after 3 weeks throwing ended up with a PR around 43 feet (42’8"). I’m a senior as well, and i really wish i got into it sooner, but other than that i’d love tips to haha. Hows it been going for you?
I never was really consistent with my throws as I tore my ACL junior year which kept me from throwing and when I came back senior I basically had to re learn everything I knew.
Throw in masters heavy weight and super heavy (56lb best comp 7.72 WR is around 16.+ for the open cat,) but I’m old it was a nat masters 0/50 Aust rec at the time.
Coach a very talented kid at the moment who throws the 5kg shot 18.60m in comp and has had a warmup no foul at 19.80m.
has one qualifier for the worlds youth and needs one more to get selected for the national youth team. Have only one shot at it left, at the end of March and hopefully the weather will be good and the peak will work.
Throwing is a lot of fun, and although this is a weights forum, and weights for a kid with moderate gentics can be a great leveler, technique is so very, very important. Strength can only take you so far.
Good luck with your throwing.
and by the way met Stephanie Brown-Tranton at a luncheon yesterday, was much prettier than expected, the games photos do not do her justice, and she was a humble and very interesting person. Great ambassador for the sport.
glad to see i’m not the only one here. i haven’t taken track as seriously as i do other sports, but this year i want to go out at a personal peak. except for the few weeks leading into the football season, i’ve never been as strong as i am now, so hopefully things will go well for me.
my PR for shot is around 40 feet
i think it’s a technique thing, because i’m confident i have the strength/explosiveness to do better. as part of our throwing warmup indoors (gotta wait for the snow to melt here lol), we toss medicine balls around and i have no problem hitting the gym ceiling with a 12 lb. med ball.
Back in the day I got a 4th place at CIF (Cali) State champs in the discus. Would have been pretty sweet except the #1 high schooler in the country also went to my school. His Dad was olympic gold medalist Fortune Gordien. And they didn’t help coach the riff-raff.
Well I used the spin before my knee injury, but when I came back it was much too quirky. The glide is much more simple and I think it allowed me to harness my power more effectively.

CBar, You should try out the Vault, you’ve got the build for it. It is a little late to start, but if they’ve got a decent coach and you’ve got passable wheels, you could easily jump 13 feet in your 1st season. That’s good enough to continue into college if you choose to.

Lift, eat, practice, sleep. Repeat.[/quote]
You were fourth in state and they considered you riff raff? I thought all the elitest coaches stuck to baseball and basketball.

Thanks! yeah i was planning on giving that a shot as well. Another goal though is to hit over 50 feet by the end of the season, any recommendations from somebody who throws glide? Or spin, either way.
I’m planning on jumping and throwing in the spring, but i hate running haha

A lot of the coaches will bypass you if you do not fit the gentic profile they have of the perfect thrower.
Al Feurbach multilpe WR breaker went to a small college as he was only 6’1 1/2". All the top schoolds could not see a future for him.
A coach posted on "the ring " how a kid asked him to show him the spin when he was 14, the coach told him he was too small to be a good shotputter and did not have the time. That kid was Reese Hoffa who won the worlds in 2007.
The problem really is there is lots of kids and very few good coaches.

Sorry for the late reply - I only check the site during graveyard shifts…
As to being 5’9". There seems to be one and only one universal trait of champions. They overcome obstacles.
I was always a very poor bench presser. Bad leverages, long arms etc. I’m defending my (age group) state bench press title this month. Crush your obstacles.
If your looking for film to watch to study technique go to macthrowvideo.com, you will have to sign up for a free account. Just thought I would share that. Do you have any video of your throwing?
