I’m trying to add some heavy lifting to my current routine. Right now I’ve been doing crossfit 3 times per week. I understand many on this site look down on the program, but I’ve done my research and found a high quality box that places a lot of emphasis on heavy and proper compound lifts. I’ve been going for about 4 months and have been getting some good results. Crossfit has forced me to begin squatting/deadlifting again as well as a myraid of other excercises. My conditioning is excellent, but since day one I’ve known that my strength gains/hypertrophy would be limited with crossfit. I’m looking to supplement my workouts with 2 days of heavy lifting.
The trick is determining how to fit these two heavy days into my routine and what to do on these days. Right now I’m thinking of doing deadlifts, squats, bench, and shoulder press for 3 heavy sets of 5. I was thinking deads+shoulder press one day and then squats+bench the other, with some ancillary bicep/dip work. The tricky thing is that during my crossfit sessions we almost always have a strength routine of 5 sets of 2-5 MAX effort lifts…in the past 4 months we’ve done front squat, overhead squad, back squat, deadlift, push press, snatch, and clean and jerks. I’ve got to do this extra lifting with these strength sessions in mind.
Here’s an idea of what I’m working with:
Current Stats:
6’3 210 10% BF
Squat: 315
Deadlift: 405
Benchpress: 255 (haven’t done it in months)
Target Stats:
220 10% BF
Squat: 400
Deadlift: 500
Bench: 300
I’ve been lifting for a few years, but not as intelligently or dilligently as I should have been. I’ve been gaining very quickly on squats/deads just from crossfit (probably because I barely did them before) but I’ve always struggled with bench. I eat pretty cleanly, very low carb with lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, poultry, and red meat. The only supplement I take is protein.
I realize the quickest way to hit my targets would be to bulk and then cut. I don’t want to sacrifice my conditioning and other fitness considerations to do this though. I realize I’m doing this the hard way, but I’m patient, as long as I know I’m headed in the right direction. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
