From 1:37 to 1:42 you can see Gomi doing squats and bench presses on a Smith machine, and not much weight, even by lightweight standards. Is there a secret to how the machine stimulates certain muscles, or is there a lightweight better than Gomi here who knows better?
I’m frankly shocked. I have always looked at those machines as stupid since they don’t work stabilizers. But then again, I’m not Gomi…
They are still pretty much worthless. I don’t know why he would not be hip to better training methods. Many fighters weight training is not what you would expect. I have seen many “behind the scenes”, “day in the life of…” type vids of many fighters and was really surprised at how they incorporated weights into their routine. I understand they are fighters, not weight lifters, but some of the stuff I have seen really surprised me (too much isolation work, too many machines, weak ass circuits etc.)
This is the most hilarious thing I’ve seen-struggling with 135 on a Smith machine doing bench and squat, and then doing handstand…well, they’re not pushups, more like just ending the elbow. Not even half reps!
come on guys. you don’t know if he was burn out before that. He could have been boxing for 6 hours before he hit that weight. Don’t know if he is injured and using the machine for that reason. Just don’t asume that’s all he can handle.
Saying that Smith machines are pretty much worthless is painting with a pretty broad brush.
I have been guilty of this in the past, but I have kinda wised up over the years to know that there is no piece of equipment that is truly worthless.
Sure - if you want to be an elite level power lifter, Smith machines may not be the smartest thing to use. And, using anything exclusively will probably foster the development of imbalances.
But the smith has gotten a pretty bad rap in the recent past as far as its worth for developing physiques. I think it fell out of favor the same way the nautilus machines did before.
I thought it looked like he had 35 LB plates on there, not 45 LB plates.
And even if they were 45 lb plates, I have never seen a smith that provides 45 LBs of resistance like an olympic bar, so the bench was more like 90 LBs, rather than 135 LB. In fact, the smith bar seems to weigh nothing.
