Silver and Steel

Sorry for the delay, and this will be a quick update - jumping on planes.

We had volleyball tournaments all weekend, which I love for my daughter, then I tweaked the poop out of my back at basketball last night (where I was actually playing ok). I sat myself down, which you know I never do if you understand my ego. I seriously think it’s because my back wore out standing watching volleyball - a little embarrassing.

I got a lat workout in with my son yesterday, which was great. He never wants to do that stuff, much less with me. All good stuff.

My side quests continue, but the reality is my character build (I really loved @T3hPwnisher’s D&D series and co-opted it for video games) is around 90s bodybuilding training. I like all the carb timing and volume and (likely meaningless) contraction types and muscle lengths, etc., so I’ll play with more of that on the road this week. We’ll probably see a foray back into bands and BFR when I get home.

For those wondering about Mag-10 and curcumin, I can say I definitely like curcumin at this point (it’s been just about two weeks). I am able to play basketball twice a week now, and walk in between. Before, it was once a week and it took a my knees 3 days to even want to waddle normally after. That’s a huge improvement. I think I am getting something out of the Mag-10, but I need to try to push the lifting frequency a little bit for a longer time period before I can tell you that it’s definitely making a recovery difference. So maybe around March I’ll have real feedback here.

I don’t post a ton of work stuff, but with all my job moves I haven’t had a full annual review cycle since 2020 until today. It was great, my boss took care of me, and I was very pleased. It’s nice it worked out getting back to where we want to live and I actually like my team and my boss - rare to nail it all.

My baby turns 11 this week! I won’t be back for the day, so we’ll celebrate this weekend. It’s crazy how old they’ve gotten. She’s all of a sudden got into watching WWE with me, and they’re live in Ohio in April, so I’m going to take her to that. My two kids are really different; it’s fun stuff, but really flies (old man talking).

Anyway, thanks to anyone that read this diatribe!

Love the direction you’re taking “Life: The RPG” there. It’s always so awesome to see the spins people take on these ideas.

I would love to see you do a program which is a homage of the training we saw in Flex in the 90’s.

I have this book ‘Get the Pump’ at home, I think you would like it.

I can relate to this. My daughter (also my baby!) is 15 and has taken an interest in watching WWE with me. To the point where Monday nights she’ll remind me that we have to watch Raw. I remember showing her videos of guys like The Rock and Stone Cold (guys who I was watching 25 years ago). It was pretty cool seeing her reaction a few weeks back when The Rock made a surprise appearance. She came unglued!

We live in Connecticut, so every once in a while, we’ll drive by Stamford and see the WWE HQ sign from the highway. I always make sure to point it out.

Hey man, what was the name of the company you’re using that sends your family a meal making kit? We’re looking to try out a new one.

@Tonino that’s really cool! My daughter also liked seeing The Rock the other night. Her favorite is Becky Lynch right now.

Alright, team, I’m back! I got in late last night.

I have an absolutely fantastic team - seriously my favorite since the army… by far. We had a great week, they crushed it (which is apparently my phrase and I say it enough they mock me), and genuinely had fun. Great environment.

My cutie turned 11! I wasn’t here, but we’ll celebrate this weekend after her volleyball tournament (and she wants to watch the Royal Rumble with me!). Great stuff.

The hotel was all side quest workouts. I got in some good “pump” work to push my character’s stats up a little, we’ll say, along with bike intervals.

Today was kicking off a main quest. @davemccright I figured I’d go with Grandmaster for the weeks I’m in town. I like the base split, and this one looks a little more “recovery” focused. When I start whining that I’m not getting anywhere, feel free to remind me I’m probably eating like a coward and that’s my problem. @simo74 can pick up the slack to just tell me I’m whining… but he might be getting bit by the dark side bug…

Started with 3 x 3 box jumps - great wake-up after a week of sitting.

Grandmaster is one I’ve been interested in for a while since it’s apparently similar to High Evolutionary (which has been my favorite MD program so far, although Gamma Bomb is hot on its heels) very excited to hear how you like it and read about your experiences with it!

In case anyone is just really hanging on for my next entry - I’ve been really sick the last few days since I got home. Maybe the newest Covid? I’m hoping to be back on my feet tomorrow.

I’ve gotten sick a lot the last few months! Every time I travel, I come home and I’m out of commission for a couple days. When I was taking I-Well, I really did feel like that helped; I felt like the Vitamin D was making my face flare up with rosacea and look like a monster, though. I don’t know where the tradeoff breaks even.

Hoping you feel better soon. I liked your post to let you know I was stopping by but didn’t like that fact you weren’t wel again.

Did me some chest and shoulders yesterday. My weights were actually decent for all my inconsistency and illness the last couple weeks.

Big ol’ back day today!

  1. One-arm BB Row
    -/8
    25/8
    50/8
    75/10
    85/8

  2. One-arm Supinated Pulldown
    Some warmups
    70/6
    50/10

  3. Rack Pull
Ended up doing some cleans, too, trying to find the right height for the pins
    135/3
    225/3
    315/6
These felt great today - I really dialed in on locking my lats in and flexing my whole back vs. just pulling the weight

  4. Chest Pull
Basically a face pull, but lower
    3 x 10

  5. Banded Pullover
Figured out the setup on these and wow it’s a totally different movement. I used the thick orange band and just a 35# DB (because I was scared I’d drop it on my face) - still got a great motion.
    35/8 x 2

  6. DB Shrugs
Did these pretty fast, so no pausing or anything - surprisingly difficult
    75/30 x 2

  7. Decline Leg Raise
    4 sets

I’m feeling pretty good again, but I still couldn’t sleep last night. Based on other people’s illnesses, I’m guessing that was Covid again. That means I’ve had it 4 or 5 times, but it hasn’t killed me. I’m not sure if that means I have the weakest immune system in the world or the strongest?

My daughter is home from school sick. At first I thought I’d really gotten her sick and felt bad and was like “of course stay home!” Now I think she was playing me and she’s just taking a couple days of tv and naps. The truth will come out when it’s volleyball practice time and she can’t go - if she’s sad, this was an act!

Let’s explore this. If we think of the immune system like the bouncer at a bar, it’s supposed to keep the riff raff out and let the “right” people in. Your immune system keeps letting in the same hoodlums, but it seems like they don’t cause too much of a problem. Perhaps that’s better than just flat out denying them and having them show up with all of their bros to cause some REAL trouble. Sometimes, you let the little dogs bark so that the big bad wolf doesn’t come by. Let’s defer to @twojarslave on that matter.

HOWEVER, if, instead, we view the immune system as comprised of white blood cells functioning as some sort of special forces unit that’s supposed to go into hostile territory and eradicate the enemy while inflicting minimal collateral damage…well you have the Ranger experience here to be able to deduce that your immune system is doing a fine job at that: but border control better up it’s game!

That was so funny it’s going to take me awhile to even craft a response - very clever!
