Whoa. Hope everything’s ok! Looks like a killer workout despite it.

That’s the best cardio. :dog2:

Or resistance training, in our case. Anti-rotation?

True. If we push the leashes out in front of us it’ll be like a Pallof press.

Thanks @Dani_Shugart - I’m just a bad sleeper.

@Chris_Shugart the dog I had to put down recently was 110 lbs of wrecking ball! I struggled with him; if he saw a squirrel or something, it was like a full strongman event just to rein him in. Since he’s gone, the remaining one gets a lot more miles in because she takes it easy on me!

You should see the craziness high school kids will do for a reverse fly. I had them do “half” reps with a pronated grip (like bench press) so they stopped before their traps and rhomboids kicked in to cheat with scapular retraction (this was for delt emphasis and not the full reverse fly).

I’m starting to enjoy teaching training more than I enjoy training. :worried: I think it’s the first step on the slippery slope to becoming a fat and out of shape trainer/coach.

And I’m very jealous of this. There’s a lateral raise machine at the Y but it doesn’t do anything for me.

Keep fighting the good fight of training as an adult/husband/dad/and whatever else you’re doing!

I understand man. I always get hyped about my “Next” Program while I’m running my current one. Although I have been loving Program X!! I have made the decision to run 28 Days Later next. Honestly tempted to hop right into it because I won’t be able to when I get back to Canada

A @Frank_C sighting! How are you, my good man?

I think this is the natural evolution of anything. I would much rather teach folks up at work than anything anymore, but I used to like being “the talent” so to speak. I think you’re doing the right thing by leaning into it and sharing your wisdom! Someone told me, when I was getting cranky and leaving the army because I couldn’t be the guy anymore, that they didn’t need my body anymore; they needed my experience. I wasn’t mature enough to listen, but sounds like you’re finding it on your own.

I have to set the seat really high and get my elbows above my ears at the top, but I like it!

Thank you! You too. How is everything?!

I absolutely loved that one. If you’re in one place for a month, it’s perfect. It’s every day, but some days are just a quick shoulder workout or something so it’s very doable. I just can’t keep up with that hard stuff anymore, I’m finding. I could blame age, but it’s lifestyle too; you have to really take recovery seriously to be all-in.

I slept decently last night, although I did actually make the house too cold (I didn’t realize such a thing was possible); the worst part was I had to admit to my wife that it was, in fact, too cold. Surely we can find something acceptable between my 55 and her 75? My vote is 65 - that seems fair.

I dreamt that I woke up and there was a bar loaded with 315 next to my bed so I deadlifted it 71 times; then I woke up for real and went and did arms.

  1. Seated DB Curl
    3s eccentric
    3 x 6ish

  2. EZ Curl
    3 x 12

  3. EZ Preacher
    3 x 8

  4. BFR EZ Curls
    Fun!

  5. Rope Pressdown
    3 x 15-20

  6. Close-grip Pin Presses
    3 x 8
I kept these high up, above my neck - felt great on the triceps

  7. EZ Skullcrusher
    4 x 12ish
I’m bringing these a little lower lately, so right above my nose or so where I used to be forehead or higher; I’m able to feel it more in my triceps than elbows this way.

  8. BFR Pressdowns
    4 sets

  9. Standing Calf
Just 3 sets and some stretches to start getting back into these. I want to get back into the Meadows’ death sets, but I haven’t been doing calves at all so need to just get some reps in.

  10. Crunch Machine
    4 sets

That was a good dream! Hope dream-you was able to recover from all those reps. That arm workout looks killer too. I wouldn’t be able to lift my arms for a while after that.

We have a puller too, but she’s nowhere near 110 pounds. That’s wild! Our little Jack Russel (pocket rocket) has such a strong pull that your feet will practically come off the ground at times. But can’t imagine what that’d be like if she had 80 more pounds on her. WOW. Sorry he’s not around anymore but glad to hear you’re enjoying walkies with the other fluffer!

He was a big strong boy! Super good-natured, great with kids, but he was a pit bull so he looked scary.

The good news with the pulling was he wore out so fast because he was so big. So he was a terror for the first 5 minutes of the walk, then you had to drag him for the remainder.

He had a tumor, so he was only 3 when he died - we weren’t expecting it. We were all sad (he was probably about my best dog I’ve ever had), but the kids and his sister appear to be over it so everyone is good now. They saw him deteriorate so I think that helped in its way.

I don’t know why my dream was so specific about the reps, but it was right at 71. Dream me wanted 100, but started fainting in the mid-60s. Real me may be nearly an order of magnitude less.

What a sweet guy! Glad to hear everyone has healed from that loss.

That’s pretty interesting! It’s crazy how the mind can pick something random and make it significant in the dream world.

I’m doing well. I’m teaching cleans today and I love it. I saw some phenomenal progress in my 3rd hour thanks to some of CT’s ThibArmy videos and drills.

On the dad front, I’m trying to figure out how to get my kids into sports without selling my soul. The junior highs don’t have football here, so there’s this club little league thing that covers football til high school. I don’t like it. The parents are nuts and only involved when sports are the topic. I’m not sure how many fields they use in town, but the two I’ve seen hire off duty law enforcement to be there to keep things under control. Nothing like showing up to a little league game and seeing the adult family members drink liquor and smoke weed in the parking lot. I’m considering driving back to my hometown for their little league program.

Volleyball isn’t quite as bad here, but it’s nuts. We’ve tried the rec league for my daughter and it’s terrible. It’s just one hit followed by a miss over and over. My daughter has shown some potential so we want her to be challenged a bit, but the next step seems to be club teams. We’re considering trying that, but it’s a big decision for us. If we try out and make the team, it’s two practices a week and six tournaments spread from November to April-ish. It’s also $700 to join the team. We’re going to go to an open gym session tonight to see how she stacks up to her peers and see if we want to do it.

The sad reality is that my wife and I have all the training and experience to teach our kids several sports and all the skills they’d need, but we don’t/won’t. It’s tough to get outside and work on drills when you’re at home. Signing up for a team and having scheduled practices ran by someone else is kind of like joining a gym vs a home gym. It’s just easier to do it outside of home. Well, lunch is over so I’d better get back to “work”.

I still have some ego hanging around. I haven’t met a lot of male PE teachers who really know what they’re doing in the weight room. I’ve studied and lived this stuff for over two decades, but I don’t really have any street credit so to speak because I’m new. We discussed having a beginner and advanced lifting class at the start of the year, but we ended up not doing it because the numbers didn’t work out. We told our Department Chair that we didn’t need to move anyone from one class to the other, and I thought we were done with it. Unfortunately, the other male weight training teacher here had all the athletes moved to his classes and gave my wife and I the kids he didn’t want. For example, I lost three football players from my 6th hour and got three refugees from Afghanistan who barely speak English. Fair trade, right? I was pissed at first, but I’m happy to teach those guys.

Short story long, I still pride myself in being able to walk the walk. It’s the only thing I have that separates me from the other male weights teacher. I know that over time things will work themselves out and kids will know who I am, but for now it’s a bit of a blow to my ego when kids want out of my class to go to his.

Lots of great stuff in here! I promise I’ll get back in and respond to it all.

I’m on the road all week and this one has been relatively busy.

Good news: I’ve gotten some solid hotel workouts in; my training has been very consistent.

Less good news: I have been an undisciplined eater (shocking) and let my bodyweight creep back up.

Lesson learned: I do well on a plan, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be counting calories (I did well on the V-diet, for instance). I think for this phase of life I need to just have easily substitutable meals (that I can find at restaurants) that are all more or less the same - this was pretty much along @QuadQueen’s recommendations, anyway, so I feel good about it.

Why not take the V-diet on the road instead?

The introspection is always positive. Good to see you getting to yes where it matters.

I… don’t know. I’m super stubborn about packing light, but a bag of MD goes into the suitcase easily enough. I have no reason not to do this. I like it now that I’m thinking more about it. It totally flips the paradigm:

  • Grow weeks: heavy training and more food at home
  • Lean weeks: lighter training and less food on the road

I’m home next week, then back on the road for two straight (and then Italy, but I’m taking my wife and enjoying a couple days there) - I think I’ll put this into action. Thank you, as always!

You should feel good about it! You gotta find what feels good and works for you - it’s all about sustainability and sanity. There’s no reason to take things to all or none extremes. A healthy sustainable balance is the best place to be! And you have my phone number and email - so is you have any questions or menus you’d like me to scope out for ya, you know where I’m at. :slightly_smiling_face:

Just throwing out my recent experiment - random fasting. If I’m not training on a day and I feel like I’ve been a bit fat prior to that, I’ll “fast”. I put it in quotes because it’s probably not any official diet, but I don’t eat till dinner. I guess depending on the timing, it could be a 24 hour fast but it’s probably more like a 20 hour fast if you account for digestion the night before.

I also throw in protein shakes some days to make it a “protein sparing modified fast”. I saw that on here somewhere and feel like it’s definitely justified on a day that is low calorie for me. Let’s be real - if I don’t eat it protein during the day, then I’m obviously going to lose at least three pounds of muscle immediately.

Alright, heroes - that cold front blowing through was me getting back home.

I got in around 1230, unpacked and slept a couple hours, then helped my wife run her “pump and run” at her gym, which is a bench press + 5k. It was cool, everyone had fun, and then she and all her coworkers celebrated being open for a year - good event.

While everyone was running and getting their medals, I went and hit a leg workout instead of falling asleep.

  1. Lying Leg Curl
    Couple warmups
    80/15
    95/12
    110/10
    125/6

  2. Superset:

  • Leg Press
    Feet high and wide
    3pps/10
    4pps/10
    5pps/10
    6pps/10
    7pps/10

  • SSB Squat
    45/6
    135/6
    185/6 x 3

  1. Stationary Lunge
    30/12 x 3

  2. RDL
    135/10
    185/10
    225/10

  3. BFR Leg Extension

I was pretty smoked at this point, so I came home and took an incredible nap.

My faithful suitcase lost a wheel on this trip and had to be retired. He deserved to go with honor - a warrior’s death - so I let the kids and their friends hit it with a baseball bat and then we threw the pieces in the trash.

Now my wife and I are off to a Halloween party just us, which I can’t remember doing at least since we’ve had kids, so this should be fun!

I don’t think anyone has ever accused me of being in his company, but I’ll take it!

By the way, just hit my goal of getting back to the 225 lb range and I’ve still been indulging here and there. Guess my intermittent fasting is working. And intermittent applies to days and weeks instead of hours. :smile_cat:

I think I’m a good decade away from this experience. Enjoy!

@TrainForPain have you tried the new Christian T programme yet? He’s been posting some brilliant articles on the site again recently. Some great insight into all the types of hypertrophy.
