Did you make it to Tennessee?
Yes sir! We’re here now. We went whitewater rafting and everyone is kind of dozing off. I’m alone with my thoughts, hence an Interwebz ramble.
I really liked your history lesson in the other thread, by the way. That was cool
I wasn’t sure if you were taking a siesta or just got introspective from drinking Moonshine. I live about 100 miles NE of Gatlinburg, so I got all hype when you mentioned it earlier. I hope you have fun.
Sometimes it’s fun to check out the old timey articles and see what new stuff is really old stuff. It’s cool that somebody is actually running these 100 year old routines and combing through this old info.
Oh hey - you’re not too far in general. I’m about a half hour north of Cincinnati. We’re headed to dinner in Gatlinburg here in a little bit. We come down here about twice a year. Was this always home for you? I grew up on the east side of the mountains in NC
I was born and raised outside of Buffalo NY and came down here for school and ended up staying.Kinda the opposite of you I guess.
I went to school in upstate NY and was shocked when I experienced my first real snow there, and it wasn’t even Buffalo level. The Midwest is kind of a middle ground I think
So jealous!!!
You’re definitely doing great work in the gym as well as with your family! That’s super inspiring to me. I love the thought you put into your posts and seeing the thinking behind how you plan your programming!
I’ve really been enjoying running Odin Force alongside you! It’s very fun running programs concurrently with other members! It’s like a throwback to the afore mentioned Surge Challenge last summer!
@QuadQueen it was a ton of fun. Brutal trip to get out there and back for that, but pretty cool to see him in his hometown.
@davemccright I appreciate that, good sir. I don’t think I’m often accused of a lot of thinking, so I must be hiding something well.
Quick update this morning!
We drove back from Gatlinburg yesterday. I don’t know how we found every traffic jam, but a sub-5 hour drive took us just under 8. Absolutely brutal and my back was feeling it today.
My son went with me to the gym this morning. He didn’t work out with me, he did his own thing, but it was awesome for him to get up and moving and taking some initiative. I’m really happy with that.
It also meant I didn’t have screw around time. I wasn’t going to have him wait on me for 2 hours and hate his experience. So that led to 3 "misses:
- I didn’t check where I was in the program, I just picked up at the first day of week 4, and I’m pretty sure I skipped a week 3 pump day with all our driving. This is not something I care about.
- I skipped abs - ha! No biggie here, either, I’ll knock out some V-ups between calls.
- I took really short rest breaks, because I was squeezing swings in, and didn’t try to get real ready for any big weights. This isn’t that different from normal anyway.
8500 swings! Let’s get this done!

Landmine Reverse Curl
Tried to copy the video, these were really brutal. It destroyed the top of my left forearm right below the elbow, which the swings have been beating up. I’m assuming my grip is just really weak, but these were freaking rough. I was doing sets of 4 on the left side.
@davemccright tell me if you figure these out!
I will note, this is where I stop liking volume progressions. A bunch of straight sets bores the absolute crap out of me. Like here’s my brain’s conversation:
“Sweet - that was pretty awesome. What’s next?”
“Do that again.”
“Ugh. Fine. Ok, then what?”
“Do it again!”
“Seriously? And then?”
“…”
Program hops
I actually loved the landmine Reverse Curl! I’ve never experienced a brachialis and brachioradialis pump like that before! I hit failure pretty hard at the end of the last two sets, with the last rep being really awkward haha, I even had to catch the barbell with other hand on my last rep of my last set. I used baby weight with just a 10 on each side. Usually, I can guess my weight by seeing how much John does in the demonstration video
I just threw it in a regular landmine, because I didn’t want to set up the thing they had in the vid. I was just doing the bar and it was too much!
I think the swings probably crushed your forearms abs grip already. That exercise is already super tough, all of those swings probably made it miserable!
I think/ hope you’re correct. I was wrecked.
Writing it down quick before I forget.
I did push yesterday after back, instead of legs, because of the rack pulls. And I didn’t want to do legs - ha! I’ll rig something in the hotel gym tonight/ tomorrow morning.
I will only have one more session in my home gym this weekend with the heavy KBs, and I want to be done with swings, so I did 750.
I’m at 9250 - almost done! My forearm is threatening to explode. I think grip strength is a gap for me that this exposed.
Dudes!
I am not being a very good training partner to @davemccright. I’m on the road a lot and really taking liberties with the program to the point it’s unrecognizable on top of not logging. My bad, my dude.
I finished the swings Friday! I took a redeye Thursday night, landed in the morning and took a call while housing breakfast at the airport, then went straight to the gym and knocked out 750 swings. I was delirious, and used a whiteboard to track my sets. I did 30 sets of 25 each, because that seemed most manageable. I’ll write up the whole experience later when I land tonight, but it was a positive one that got me out of a rut for sure.
My son’s 13th birthday was yesterday. He’s growing up really fast. It’s crazy to think he’s a teenager. He wanted it low key, which we did, and I think he was really happy. The dude absolutely loves movies and theater, and wanted to go see Haunted Mansion - it was delightful; I highly recommend.
I read @T3hPwnisher‘s blog about arcades and the 90s and had an epiphany… not about getting my training act together, but to treat my kids to the awesomeness of the 90s. So when I get home Wednesday, I’m going to gather them up, go see ninja turtles, then eat pizza and play video games at the bowling alley next door. Thanks again, my good man!
The dog has lasted a couple weeks longer than estimated, but was really struggling to breathe this morning my wife said. I believe this will be his last week (I’ll probably handle it when I get back). It’s sad, because he was awesome, but he was a happy guy and I’d rather he go this way than with some prolonged suffering or trauma.
It’s been awesome doing this program with you and I always look forward to your updates and your thoughts on the exercises and workouts as a whole!
That’s outstanding news with the kiddos dude! I keep doing the same: give them a taste of the most awesome decade ever.
Sorry I haven’t been logging, team. I got home today, got in a push workout, and am wrapping up a couple meetings before 90s night:
- TMNT
- Arcade
- Pizza
Outstanding (accidental) suggestion!
Its just not good enough, how are my biceps supposed to grow if they cant read about the curls you are doing.
