Shugs' Blog - The Physique Clinics

Not sure what this has to do with this thread unless you are hoping for a BB participant in the Clinic?

And regarding how the site started, things change. Business must adapt to market. It is the way of things if you want to be around for years to come.

Dangerously Hardcore!
The Testosterone mission statement
by Tim Patterson

Welcome to Testosterone, the website that almost charged the world’s highest subscriber fee! Huh? Why is a website, particularly one that focuses on muscle building and physique enhancement in general, bragging about almost becoming the most expensive site in the world? No, we haven’t fried our brains out by reading too many Joe Weider editorials (actually, we’re in withdrawal from not getting enough real training information).

Truth be told, this site is absolutely free. Let me explain:

We’re going to pack this website with the best hardcore, renegade muscle-building, and fat-burning information available. And, quite honestly, we were going to charge you a muscular arm and leg for it. With the stuff we’re going to give you, with the experts we’re going to feature, we absolutely felt it would have been worth it.

But, after a few sleepless nights spent reevaluating our goals, we figured we’d be better off you’d be better off if we didn’t charge you anything!

Look, our main reason in establishing this website is that we’re in the process of putting together the most informative, irreverent physique magazine on the planet: Testosterone…Muscle With Attitude.

Many of you who used to read Muscle Media 2000 a couple of years ago stopped because, almost overnight, it lost its edge and went mainstream. Most readers and industry critics realize that, to a large extent, the soul, the flavor, the feel of the magazine was due to then Editor-in-Chief TC Luoma. As soon as TC was inexplicably replaced as editor, the magazine took on a whole new, softer feel, leaving those of us who want the real deal looking for a place to get it.

Well, a lot of people weren’t really happy with Muscle Media’s new direction (and neither were some of the world’s most highly regarded “physique theorists” who want to come on board with Testosterone you’ll freak when you hear some of the people poised to join us in the near future, as soon as their contracts with other companies run out!). We’ve got a feeling that all those ex-Muscle Media readers are out there looking for a new source of cutting-edge information on how to build muscle fast!

Here’s what we’re going to do:

Put out the toughest muscle-building magazine ever, printing anything and everything that has to do with hardcore muscle building, regardless of who it offends.

Talk honestly about supplements and the supplement business. Want to know if one brand of creatine is better than another? Want to know the amazing story behind some of the industry's hottest supplements? Want to know how anybody could come up with a product like Met-Rx in about five minutes? You'll be able to read about it in the pages of Testosterone.

Seek out the best scientists in the world to produce a line of super-supplements that are based on controlling the endocrine system, i.e. testosterone, GH, estrogen, DHT, etc. In fact, many of these compounds have drug-like effects and might well have been marketed as such, if the pharmaceutical companies had beaten us to them!

Talk openly about steroids and take a proactive stance toward legalizing doctor-supervised use of them.

  Have fun doing it.

Trouble is, we can’t just publish a couple of million magazines, load them into a transport plane, and dump them out the back as we fly across the country. And, we can’t very well flood the newsstands with a new physique mag with the hope that our very specific, very elite market (you!) will find us behind People and Better Homes and Gardens. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. Instead, we need to compile a mailing list to find out what kind of people might be interested in a magazine written to help you build your body. Oh, a couple of these mailing lists already exist, but the owners jealously guard them. They’d sooner give up a kidney than sell anyone their list.

Consequently, we don’t know who you are. Hence this website. In exchange for giving you the info hardly anybody knows about before anybody else knows about it we want your name and mailing address. That way, we’ll know exactly who out there might be interested in our subscription offers. And, as soon as the mailing list grows big enough, we’ll launch the printed magazine.

Anyhow, here’s what you’ll be able to get on this website every single day for free with absolutely no strings attached.

Many of you have, no doubt, heard of Charles Poliquin. He is, arguably, the world’s greatest strength coach. He’s shown thousands of athletes how to add pounds of muscle and break through training plateaus like they don’t exist. He’s responsible for scores of Olympic medals for the athletes he’s trained, and he’s taken muscle building way into the 21st century. Most people, even those who are acknowledged as experts, walk away muttering to themselves after a session with Charles as they start to realize that they weren’t as knowledgeable as they thought they were. Strength-training coaches aren’t usually categorized this way, but Charles Poliquin is the Mozart of his field. Sheer genius.

How would you like to have access to Charles at no cost to you? How would you like to have your questions about muscle building, strength training, fat loss, and supplementation answered by Charles?

Guess what? You can have your wish. We’re incredibly excited to say that Charles has joined the Testosterone team and, in his “Question of Strength” column, he’ll answer several questions posed by Testosterone website readers. You’ll be privy to the most high-tech physique enhancement info available! And it’s absolutely free!

You’ll also have access to a feature called “Gang of Five.” Our panel of experts some you’ll recognize, some you won’t will answer questions about physique-enhancing drugs, supplements, training, and nutrition. This feature will be entirely uncensored and will, no doubt, at times offend a lot of people. Oh, well. We’ll feature new questions and new answers monthly.

You’ll get a variety of uncensored, informative articles and editorials, and you can bet that they won’t be the same-old, run-of-the-mill type of editorials or features you see printed in the current batch of newsstand mags. Frankly, if we’re not causing someone’s anus to pucker, provoking them to throw furniture around and utter strange babblings about our ancestry, we’re not doing a good job.

And, yes, we’ll sell our own Biotest line of unconditionally guaranteed supplements, including TRIBEX-500?, the only supplement in the world to contain FGP? (7-isopropoxyisoflavone), the long sought-after European estrogen-inhibitor; and Power Drive?, the product that can increase your strength dramatically within 30 minutes, in addition to improving your concentration and energy by leaps and bounds.

We are really excited about our supplements, but despite our strong urge to do so, we’re not going to go overboard here praising our products you get bombarded enough from other supplement manufacturers. We’ll reserve most of our accolades for the Biotest site. All we ask is that you visit the Online Store and take a look for yourself.

Okay, that’s all stuff you can access for free. We’ll also provide other great services and information resources for a reasonable fee.

For instance, how would you like to have Charles Poliquin design a program for you, personally, and how would you like to have him update it every month? (Charles normally charges over $2000 a day to train people, and you know something? He’s always booked solid.) You can do that right through the Internet, on the Testosterone website.

And, periodically, we’ll also feature a variety of reports and publications, such as Charles’ new book, “Winning the Arms Race.”

If you’re like us, tired of reading the same old lame stories written by sub-literate morons, you’re ready to tap into Testosterone…Muscle With Attitude. If you want to get turned on to hardcore muscle again, go for it!

No, I’m voicing my opinion that I don’t want to see muscle gainers excluded and replaced predominantly with fat loss contestants.

Mission statements, like company values, are the compasses of the business world. They are what keep companies on track during turbulent times.

Companies invest so much time and effort into writing them, because they are meant to remain static.

While the before and after photos of a guy trying to pack on muscle may be less than dramatic, a well written account of dietary intake, training sessions and the overall experience of training at the hands of top guys in the business is invaluable information for people like me who may currently have different goals, but will at some point need to take on a mass-building program.

USCTrojan’s log was a great read and I found CrewPierce’s to be a good read as well. Like I said, the pictures may not be great, but the information from the coaches and feedback from the participants is awesome!

I’d have to say this is not 100% true. Companies rewrite mission statements all the time. Remaining “static” in today’s business climate is financial suicide. A company must always be prepared to adapt and change to meet new market demands and the ever-changing demands of customers. Some of the most successful companies around got there by abandoning their original business and moving to a position more in line with what they found to be their core strengths.

The mission statement clearly reads “website with the best hardcore, renegade muscle-building, and fat-burning information available”.

There’s those words again. Fat burning.

I have both goals: fat loss AND muscle gain…my before and afters would KICK ASS!

not picking skinny guys? what the fuck man. if they only pick one, im hoping its me. i messed up on my application though, i put i weighed 200 when im only in the low 190’s cause every damn scale i used was off by 5 or so lbs.

anyway theres a million shows on TV that show fat people losing weight, theres just as many skinny people as fat people, and you can make any newb stick gain weight by having him lift consistently for a month or two aslong as he eats. i want them to take me, an ecto who already put on some weight and dont look half bad to help me get to that next level.
That is the hard part.

lol shameless plug?

Would be fun to watch if you had 2 years of footage and could compile that into a few hours or something, but watching someone gain 35 grams of muscle per week is not that entertaining, gotta be honest.

I did enjoy Trojan’s blog though but that was mostly because he wrote in an entertaining fashion, not because of his gains from week to week. I’m sure it’s fun for others in the same situation to see what they’re eating and how they’re training, but several posts every day all with just a list of what they ate that day… meh. I’d much rather read about the life changes that the fat loss group is making.

Well I must say I’m glad that people are getting something out of my log even though I’m not as exciting as the other guys.

I would have to agree with many of you that despite Trojan not having the visual results of Gus, his log was the best. I know that even being in the PC, I still enjoyed reading his log!

I guess my point is kinda that only a handfull of people will relate to and appreciate the effort that the clinic ectos go through, while more people will enjoy the fat loss clinics. You don’t have to be fat to enjoy reading about how someone’s life changes completely as they shed a whole other person off of their bodies. Reading about changes in how they view foods, the people around them etc is all good reading and food for thought for all of us.

So who do you cater to? The 5% or the 95%? Seeing how we’re all potential customers, and this is a form of marketing…

I’m not saying “please, no more ectos”, I’m just saying that I understand why they want more fat loss clinics.

So Chris Shugart admits that he knows nothing about building muscle, at least that is the way I read it. I guess it is easier to have a fat person lose weight, but that is not really bodybuilding, now there is it? That’s just losing fat, bodybuilders call it “getting ready for a competition”. The off-season, building the mass is the real hard work, and I am paraphrasing Ronnie Coleman here… T-Nation has such a know-it-all attitude, and now it appears they can’t get an ectomorph to gain weight, sheesh… I’m off, there’s still a few articles left in this month’s MD that I haven’t read.

If you’re trying to insinuate that I have anything against “fat burning” or overweight contestants trying to lose body fat, then you’re mistaken.

I said I don’t want to see the muscle gainers excluded so the clinic focuses predominantly on fat loss contestants. Does that sound like I have a problem with them? Does it sound like I’m suggesting that they should be in the minority of the contestants? No, it doesn’t, because that was never the message I was trying to convey.

My point is that the website with the best hardcore, renegade muscle-building part of the equation is being severely compromised if Shugs thinks that those wanting to pack on lots of muscle are too boring because they aren’t showing progress quickly enough and therefore don’t deserve equal representation. (Please note my use of the word “equal” and not “majority”)

teehee, it was worth a try lol

This is a body building site. Building muscle should definitely be given priority over losing fat.

Trojan was selected because he sounded like an especially hard gainer. Crew joined the clinic saying he had plateaued. Now that kinda selection ain’t that intelligent if all you want is visible gains, but I reckon normal lean guys wouldn’t be so slow at gaining. And even 12 lbs of muscle would be a good visible difference for someone as skinny as me (just an example; I’m ineligible for the clinic).
I agree that selecting the normal lean guy out there would help. What happens when you get a beginning/intermediate trainee and combine the optimal program, diet, and coaching? I’ve heard people say that this approach wouldn’t be all that helpful because most newbies gain easily and don’t need as much direction, etc. I think it would be interesting to see, though.

I think it’s pathetic that they are going to reduce the number of ectos just because Chris Shugart was never a skinny guy himself, I mean, that’s a really weak reason.

It’s completely wrong to say that people on these forums aren’t as interested in hardgainer transformations: when it was still on, Trojan’s clinic had , BY FAR, the most views - even though it had started later. Obviously his writing was entertaining but I also think almost everyone will pay more attention to the participant that they feel closer to. Trojan was skinny, and I think there’s A LOT of hardgainers browsing the forums and buying supplements from Biotest. Probably about as many as there are fat guys.

The real problem with ecto clinics here is that both only lasted a few weeks, not long enough to see dramatic improvements - although Trojan’s 10lb gain was really impressive I think, considering a good part was muscle.

I don’t understand why fat loss is more exciting to watch. To former fat people only, I guess.

I’d remove one of the fat-guy clinics and replace it with a performance clinic, with someone like Eric Cressey or Mike Robertson in command. You wouldn’t care about looks, just performance. A few vids instead of a few pics.

I read that about 30% of Americans are clinically obese; never mind the run of the mill overweight, chubby and “skinny fat” people out there.

When you combine the fact that these people are clearly in the majority (ie: greater potential market) and that fat-loss contestants make greater body weight changes (ie: visual proof that the supplements actually do something) then you have all the reasons you need to make this decision.

From a business perspective I understand their point of view. But this isn’t my business; rather a place where I can pickup the odd bit of information and be with like minded individuals.

I’m not overweight; so fat loss transformations don’t particularly interest me (although I’m sure it does others, so they should be included); nor am I an “ecto” - but I do want to see participants putting on mass. You’d figure with all the supplements, the world class coaching, and, let’s not forget, the fact that the participants are hand picked from thousands of applicants that they would be able to get a few guys capable of putting on enough muscle in 3-4 months to make this interesting for their readers.

i thought the PC was for helping out T-Nation members and showing that the coaches could take anyone and transform them into works of art. i didnt know it was about taking a fat guy and making him lose weight so everyone could just be entertained by it. fuck the entertainment. theres enough things is this world to keep you entertained this should be about 1 on 1 traning provided as a service to lucky members who find themselves eligible and inducted.

personally i never read anyones clinic other than the 2 ectos because i wanted to see what type of treatment they were getting so i could apply it to myself. i know theres a shitload of ectos on this site who did the same thing and want another ecto so they can take it past the baby-step workouts and move on to better shit.

as far as progress, ive personally used the ecto philosophies and when i started benching again (i used to just use DBs and Hammer Strength) i took it from a weak 205x1 to a decent 225x5 in over a month and have noticed development on my chest.

id love to be part of this clinic for the professional advice and structure but id also love to show all the other hardgainers out there that if you just work your fucking ass off you can actually achieve something. i mean shit i went from being so skinny people thought i was a fein who did drugs like crack to being big enough that people think im a football player who does drugs like steroids. but if i dont get picked for the PC i guess the best advice i can give you skinny sons-of-bitches out there is to bench, squat, and deadlift and hit them as hard as you can, really dig into yourself and pull out that strength and eat all the time.

if youre a new lifter, you can grow pretty quick but dont get discouraged after that intial 20-30 lb gain just keep hammering away and little by little youll be on your way to being the biggest motherfucker at the gym, beach, club, school or wherever you go.

ya, what he said!

Accept I don’t want to look like a football player on steroids :stuck_out_tongue:

as a side note since i havent seen this posted yet. I highly doubt they wont have at least one person trying to gain. Just not more then that. Would be interesting to see someone who has dieted down on their own do a bulk though, mainly cause thats almost where I am at now.
