I wear sweatpants. No cuts, only bruises now. It’s great.
I use masking tape
Keep the bar away from your shins as you bring it up.
I used to do that on power cleans, but never on deadlifts. It doesn’t really touch my legs until it hits my thighs.
Wear the scars with pride.
I have scars on my shins from deadlifting that will probably never go away. But I haven’t drawn blood in a while. Here’s why:
Step one: high socks.
Step two: wrap long cloth knee wraps up your shins. Start at about three inches above the ankles, wrapping them over the socks. Stop just below the knees. Thread them through at the top so they don’t unravel. After about two or three sets, I sometimes need to re-cinch them.
Step three: as politico said, sweat pants (though I used to draw blood with sweat pants alone).
So it’s socks covered by knee wraps up the shin, which are all covered back down with sweat pants. This isn’t ideal for hardcore powerlifting, as the surface of the shins get somewhat uneven as you’re dragging up the bar. But for general bodybuildng work, it beats re-opening the same scabs every deadlift day.
duct tape those fuckers
Or wear some UA high socks.

If it’s really a big deal to you, just wear longer socks.
If you want more protection, take an empty 2-liter bottle of coke, cut some of the plastic out, then slide that in your socks so it covers your shins.
soccer socks
Someone had the idea of soccer shin guards.
I also wear soccer socks (see avatar picture) but even that would just rip and then so would my skin. What I then decided to do was take a hand washcloth and tape one to each shin.
Take a washcloth and fold it in half and lay it on your shin and then tape it down on the top and bottom with high quality athletic tape. Pull the soccer sock over it and the problem is solved. I have used this in the USAPL and AAU in competitions and there has never been a problem with the rules. Most important thing is that ripping your shins open every week will be over.
It has nothing to do with being hardcore. You can prove that in other ways. Constantly nursing wounds that are bleeding weekly will eventually lead to infection and will distract you mentally from what is important and that is deadlifting.
Your problem is good in one respect because it proves that you are keeping the bar close to the body on the pull. You may subconsciously start to let the bar drift forward to prevent shin drag to keep from opening up the scabs. Just be creative in your own techniques for health and efficient training.

or just buy shin gaurds.
I was thinking long socks would be the way to go, but I didn’t know if they would enough and didn’t to waste money on them.
thanks
Use a trap bar for your deadlifts.
Seriously, conventional barbell deadlifts suck, when compared to trap bar deadlifts. See a recent discussion on this topic: http://www.T-Nation.com/readTopic.do?id=1456493

reach down and wipe the blood with your fingers/hands between sets. lick it off. enjoy the looks of disgust and confusion on the faces of your “peers.”
Bluejeans, and say bye-bye to the scrapes.

It is a bit of stretch to say one of the best exercises there is sucks. I would also wager with confidence that there is a better transfer from barbell deads to the trap bar than from the trap bar to the barbell, which speaks to the inherent benefit of the barbell.
I do enjoy trap bar farmer’s walks though.
I have been a powerlifter for over 25 years, and I have the scars to prove it. I just bleed, especially with a new Texas power bar. Scars are cool, so just lift.
