Sharia Law on Hold... for Now.
Chushin wrote:
To be completely honest, I think this attempt at an anti-Sharia law was more primarily political grandstanding than anything else.

Having said that, I’m amazed at how “asleep” some of you seem to be!

In the last few years, we have had what is arguably America’s leading academic institution publish a scholarly study of “the cartoons.” WITHOUT the goddamned cartoons themselves! We have had a network COMEDY CARTOON censored. We have had people threatened with death – and in other Western countries, even murdered – for criticising a religion or it’s prophet. Islamic violence and threats have been responsible for all of this.

How do you not get this? There is a significant part of Islam that accepts NOTHING less than what it sees as “truly Islamic.” It doesn’t matter the location, the religious persuasion of those involved, or the rule of law. Islam is the ONLY way.

And it’s not like Islam has no history of “moving in, taking over and cleansing.” It does.

So, this particular law might not be such a huge deal, but some of you need to stop acting like others here are just paranoid fear-mongerers.

It wasn’t that long ago that a person would have been laughed at for predicting that someday you would be threatened with death for drawing a cartoon. Yet, here we are.

WTF? What do you think CHRISTIANITY did?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? You could replace “Islam” with “Christianity” in your post.

And out of the evening fog a forgotten figure approaches warily casting his eyes about the PWI . . . his gaze lands upon the most asinine sight ever to be seen . . . people were arguing over whether or not Sharia Law should be banned from use in place of existing American jurisprudence and with a mighty yell he lifted he torch into the sky and thundered . . .

BAN SHARIA LAW FROM OUR SHORES FOREVER!!

Then noticing that every was staring at him . . he said plainly - I am no Islamaphobe . . . I don’t fear Islam, I just don’t want to be a dhimmi . . . he looked upon their faces and wept for their ignorance for history had proven time and again that the Law of Islam was Bound with the Sword of Islam, and where the one so the other follows as night after day.

“I place no evil intent in the heart of the muslim, for I cannot see into thier hearts, but nor do I ignore the cries from the graves of the millions who have died under the cruel hand of Islam who welcomed it peacefully only to have discover that they allowed a viper to rest among their children.”

And with weary heart and a sad look, he gathered his belongings together and trudged on into the night.

“Fare you well, for if you do this thing, you will live to regret it within your own lifetime. Islam’s peace is plain to see, I have walked the graveyards it has filled and they were truly at peace . . . .”

You mean they enforce their stupid laws through violence!?!

I am shocked to hear that!

Let us hope that we never sink that low.

Did you know that you can be shot for having unauthorized plant material in your home?

True story!

Probably more likely than a world wide califate too!

Yep, that happens ALL the time!

Must be thousands of such cases!

Just like people being murdered for expressing criticism of Islam.

All the time, I tell you.

Exactly the same.
Well it is much, much, much more likely to happen to him than a Muslim uprising in the US that will force him to live under Nigerian style sharia.

I also hope that he flosses, wears his seatbelt and has all his savings neatly tucked away where the US government cannot get to it, preferably not in dollars.

If he has done all that he is perfectly free to worry about ze ebil Muslims, until then he thinks zebras, not horses.

Huh? Judges often sentence people based on the Ten Commandments?

i’m probably one the most “islamophile” posters on this board.

unlike most of you, i live in a muslim aera in a country where muslims represent 10 percent of the global population.
I do not see them on my TV screen, i see them “next door”.
I have muslim students, muslim neighbors, muslim friends, muslim co-workers, a muslim ex-girlfriend and a muslim brother-in-law.
I have read the Qu’ran, and studied muslim philosophy, theology and mysticism.
I understand both side of the debate between Averroes and Thomas Aquinas.
I know a good bit of Arab
I even learned to play to play the Oud with a muslim teacher.
I not only love muslim food, i actually know how to cook it.

as a result, i don’t “believe that most muslims are ok”. I actually KNOW it.
but I know more than that :
that the distinction between extremists and moderates is a ridiculously simplistic one, that the muslim world is extremely diverse, extremely complex and extremely divided.
and that, some groups, some non-terrorist groups, are actually a threat for “freedom as we know it”.

Interesting post man… keep posting here in PWI, you give a perspective that many can’t give.
Me, me, me! What about my perspective? Grew up in pakistan and am now in the UK. Sorry, just trying to force myself into the debate.

I knew some crazy dudes in pakistan - I was young then, but thinking back, I’m glad I didn’t get involved with them or else you lot might have me on a no-fly list now.

Fine, but their little PR issue didn’t come about because of some bigotry or media referendum. They did it themselves, by acting violently, proclaiming hatred and death to all non-muslims and have done all kinds of nasty evil things to others and each other in the name of Islam, today, in the here and now, in the current present.

Where your non-violent brethren are culpable is they haven’t and aren’t doing a single fucking thing about it. It’s a problem muslims need to fix in house and they aren’t. They will condemn but there is always a caveat, “Yeah, 9/11 was a tragedy, BUT if America _____________.” “Ok, suicide bombing are bad, BUT if Israel ___________.” Sorry, I find that disingenuous. If you are against something really, there are never any "BUT"s involved.

yep
never said the contrary

yep

but do not forget that “public opinions” are not natural.
it’s a quite recent invention in the West (it started with book and leaflet printing in the Renaissance, and developped latter through the rise of democracy).

in the muslim world, the development of public opinions is still in an embryonic state.

also, the muslim world has no more central “moral authority” since the fall of the Caliphate in 1924.
it’s a shattered world.
