HAs anyone on the site noticed a significant change in lifting ability during the winter months?
I’ve been lifting for a year and a half now and recently lifted through my first winter. While I was motivated in going to the gym and sticking to a program, I noticed that I seemed to be stuck at a slower pace.
Then about 2 months ago when the sun actually started coming out in my area (for some reason winter seemed to last quite a while) I noticed my motivation reached the new heights and the quality of my lifts improved dramatically. Progress also picked up.
I wouldn’t think anything of this, but I’ve always felt a little down during the winter months. I’ve never really put much effort in to correcting this, but now that I have more at stake, I’d like to keep this from happening again.

Yes i notice it too, especially when my membership runs out at the gym and i have to lift in my backyard for a week or so before i can get back in the gym…the cold really kills workouts.
My ex had a really bad case of SAD and went to a specialist for it. He said that we all have it to some degree. I’ve found that to be true with just about anyone I have spoken to on the subject.
Yeah me too. I make great progress in the fall, but Jan & Feb just suck. I feel fine physically, but in the gym nothing works. The spring and summer are better. I just keep training in the winter, and don’t expect as much.
I have a fairly serious case of SAD myself. In the Winter EVERYTHING in my life takes a nose dive, my lifting (and motivation to do so), my school, my attitude in general, the only good thing about this is i know who my real friends are because they’re still friends with me in the winter.
I know there are medications out there, and a lot of other things you can do like purchase certain types of in home lighting. I have a light that sits by my bed and will turn on like an alarm clock at any time so if for instance i’m going to be waking up at 7am, it will turn on at 5:30 or so.
The object of the light is to make my body feel like the sun is shining on it for an hour and a half before i wake up and generally speaking it makes waking up and my morning attitude much better.
Good luck dealing with it though and if you come to any ground breaking conclusions post here again! Screw SAD.
Since its cold out it might stiffen you up a bit and your body might take it apon its self to prevent injury by makeing you slightly weaker or at least keeping you from a portion of your gains.
That was pulled right out of my ass, sounds like it could be true tho.
