Scapular Winging, How To Fix?

These are pictures of my brothers back, it is quit freaky…

I think it is called scapular winging? he is 16 5’10 140lbs

is there anyway to fix this? Well other than the fact he needs to EAT,

here are some pics, to show how bad it is, and well to laugh at

lol…

Row, Row, row, your boat.

Seriously, get that boy to start doing more posterior chain work such as rowing and neutral grip pullups. Limit benching(use dumbbbells) and focus more on overhead shoulder press for a bit till he corrects his issue.

The articles: Heal that hunchback and neanderthal no more would do him a lot of good.

scapular winging occurs when the serratus anterior muscles are weak.

try scap pushups and things like that to work the serratus anterior.

but besides having a weak serratus, it looks like he has very little upper back musculature anyway, which exaggerates the winging. so rowing to chest level like the above poster suggested would definitely help.

Thanks for the help, I’ll make him do some serratus anterior exercises and lots of rows, yes he doesn’t have any back mass which is a problem but it seemed worse to me than other skinny kids with no mass in their back.

Thanks again, I’m going to go make him eat a sandwich

Good advice. Scapular winging is most commonly caused by dysfunction of the SA, so attempting to strengthen it should do no harm.

However, I would strongly recommend that your brother seek professional advice to determine the underlying cause. It could simply be muscle weakness, but then again it could be something more sinister, such as long thoracic nerve palsy.
