Samurai Diet

So it seems like Nate Miyaki’s Samurai Diet is basically Paleo + potatoes and rice. So far so good. My main goal right now is 15-20lbs of fat loss, so I’m limiting carbs to post-workout. Just wondering how Nate feels about the following foods:

greek yogurt
apple/grape juice with protein powder immediately post workout

Yes I realize that these aren’t Paleo but he does accept/endorse minor modifications of Paleo for physique-centric programs. Unfortunately I didn’t see specific mention of either of these in his blog articles or in his [excellent] book.

To my knowledge, fruits/fruit juices are not as good postworkout because they replenish liver glycogen rather than muscle glycogen.

I may be wrong though.

Hmmm, interesting point. But I though post-workout (weight training) an insulin surge (secondary to the fast carbs) preferentially shunts everything to muscle - ???

And also, what about beef jerky?

Depending on how strict you want to be, the preservatives in jerky would be a questionable item.

Fruit juice = poor insulin surge. You will find this dichotomy between using the samuari/paleo diet and insulin spiking has been a point of contention many a times.

Personally, I believe that supplementation is necessary for that “spike” that you are looking for… of which most, if not all, sources are usually not approved by the dietary guidelines set forth.

CLIFFS: Do what you want. You could try a 12 wk stint of both supplementation and non-supplementation and see what works for you.

yeah that’s good advice

ultimately I think a bit of self-experimentation is a positive thing, and necessary as no two people are exactly alike

thanks

I’m pretty sure the samurai drank a lot of sake periworkout.
It’s made from rice so it should fit in the diet.

Fruit juice post workout isn’t great, its made up of mainly fructose which causes no insulin spike at all, if you want something easy to use and cheap, buy some dextrose and mix 20g post workout to your protein shake. Not many kcals and will do the trick.

While it is a mistake to say fructose causes ‘no’ insulin spike, as far as your muscles are concerned it may aswell not. Insulin is indescriminately anabolic, meaning it will shuttle something somewhere, not neccessarily to muscle, anabolism is not restricted to muscle. Fructose is, as was correctly stated earlier, preferentially stored as liver gylcogen not muscle glycogen.

Fruit and fruit Juice should come at the botom of the carb heirachy in the eyes of the BBer, especially on a cut. You would be served much better with a glucose based carb powder in your protein. Or simply, as mr Miyaki reccomends, with rice, potatoes or yams in the post workout period.

That aside great book and you are definitely on the right track by following the guidelines.
