Hi guys, I completely destroyed my left knee playing basketball on 4/12/12. I own a gym, compete in bodybuilding and live to be physical. If anyone has any experience with recovery from this, please share. They are telling me that it will be 12 months before I am somewhat normal, but I disagree:) Much appreciated! -Kyle
Complete rupture? Did you get surgery? You can’t even jog for 6 months post op, so I wouldn’t get to excited about coming back fast
Yes, I had surgery, complete rupture, actually tore it in half both horizontally and vertically. I did talk with Louie Simmons twice already and he had full range of motion in his knee 6 weeks after surgery. Once I’m given the green light, I will rehab it like a mad man and implement Louie’s rehab protocol in addition to what the PT’s have me doing…
I had the exact same injury 2-years plus 2-weeks ago.
I injured myself on a Saturday. I had surgery the following Tuesday. I was in a hard cast until Thanksgiving. I worked my first soccer game (I am a soccer referee) wearing a knee brace right before Memorial Day (very difficult). By Labor Day, I was working 4 soccer games every Saturday for 10-weeks.
Let me know if you need additional insight on PT and /or returning to the gym.
Slow and easy my friend. This is a very difficult injury to recover from.
There’s a guy here who’s doing prolotherapy for his patella tendon injury with great results. You can look him up.
I think a complete rupture and surgery is past the point of prolotherapy. Slow recovery, light weight, lots of eccentrics is probably the way to go. I’ve had my fair share of injuries and coming back slow has always worked better than rushing it.
My reconstructed shoulder is now my good shoulder, and I’m having my hip done to fix an impingement and small labral tear. I have impingement in both hips, left is worse so it’s getting fixed first. Doctor said 6 months, I’m not rushing it.
Think long term, you never get 100% after an severe injury, but you can get very close. Remember you have to live with that joint (or a replacement) the rest of your life. I would take an extra month or two to rehab any day if it means it will keep my joint healthier longer. In the end that extra rehab time will keep you lifting and active years longer.
