I’ve seen several guys post that they play rugby. Being a rugger myself, I’m curious; how many rugby players do we have in the T-nation. I picked up the game in college at Florida Atlantic University. Up until a few months ago I played with the Boca Raton Men’s Club. I’ve played just about every position, with the exceptions being hooker, scrummie, and fly-half. So let’s hear it guys, and maybe some crazy stories from tournaments, drink-ups, etc. I have plenty myself, but I’m going to bed now, so I will let someone else have the honor of the first story!
bump…anyone?
I’m a scrum half, though i have played at all of the backs positions. Great game, though we normally focus on the post-game drinks. Check out UBMSRFC.COM, you might like it - it is our home site.
Is it true that ruggers eat their dead?
No, but we’ll dig 'em up and f*&% 'em again!
played 2 years for ombac, san diego at the “little q”
played 11, 13, 14, and 15, as a reserve and sometime starter the first year, and started at 15 my second year, both on the Div III B side.
you all know more about the game than i do… but no one had more fun than i did. had to quit because i started b-school with classes every wed and sat. when i come out of school i will be 30, married, and no telling if my knees will still be able to run that much…
sniffle
Hooker, captain of my college side in undergrad. I played for a men’s side (7’s and 15’s) in grad school.
At 31, this is my rookie season. Playing inside center on B-side right now, they are looking at me for scrum half.
Our club~
Two years at a psu branch campus, and summer 7’s with the psu main campus. Played inside center and wing forward and was captain for 2 semesters.
i miss those days more than anything…
stumpty, where did you go to school?
RifRaf, PSU (i assume the nittany lions) has an awesome program, you were so lucky! It must have been great having actual coaches and plenty of guys out for practice. I’m jealous. Anyone been to savannah for st. paddy’s? I was there this year. I ended up having to handcuff my right hand to my balls and run through the hotel and parking lot to the pool for a plunge. (I lost a bet, and yes it was cold!) Let’s hear some stories.
fullback/wing, and president of the men’s collegiate team here at ohio university
That’s awesome Ren, Ohio has got a great team from everything I’ve read. You guys usually have a couple players at least in collegiate all-stars, etc. How did you do this spring?
I played for a few years for UC San Diego back in the college days – fly half and inside center. I don’t think I could even begin to post the lyrics for most of our drinking songs on this board, for fear of being banned by the mods or permanently scarring the psyches of the lady folks.
Any of you guys ever have a rugby queen? Or have to shoot the boot after your first try?
Blacthorn - 6 years. I miss it. Now I am an old boy, dammit. Might have to give it another shot.
“Old age and treachory will defeat youth and skill”
- old rugger proverb
haven’t had to ‘shoot the boot’, yet, but we had out spring tournament ‘after party’ and took my rookie lumps.
several of the rooks were introduced to some good natured initiation games or stunts. our too rook props did a tequila shot called ‘stuntman’…if you have no idea how this goes, let’s just say it has a real “punch” to it and salt is not meant to be snorted.
deciding that I was going to earn my stripes then and there I went up and did a stuntman shot with our a-side fly half (a nut named Chris who does this at every party against anyone).
after my fraternity years I knew it wouldn’t hurt more than getting tagged with a pledge paddle.
needless to say after taking my lumps (of which they captured on film and framed) I went from ‘no name rookie’ to rookie the a-side was talking to all the time the next day.
