Rugby, Life in Italy & Personal Challenges

Hey Warren,

Iacapo (The Italian Stallion) is doing really well, has his six pack showing and hasn’t drunk since new years. I want to know the real story about what happened.

Bench is up to 107kg (235)now. Dead 190kg (418) and Squat gets tested tomm.
Still low but improving every week. Gonna play here in Europe for another year, find out more in next couple of weeks.

If anyone reading this is going to visit Wellington New Zealand look up Warren at the Powerhouse Gym, incredible place great atmosphere. Check out their site. Worth a laugh just for the No’s page. True T-Nation styles set up by a true t-man.

Joe Murphy,

In season training depends entirely on frequency of games and quality of opposition. I just listen to my body and now that the season is almost over I have cut my training to two gym sessions a week. No more CT’s superman training for now.

Don’t really have any problems with my back. Technique is most important in scrums, eyes up back arched slightly upwards and ass down. Bindings with other lock and prop also determine stability a lot.

My main problem is flexability of the hips and being 6’10 with long levers. I hate squats, bench but love deads.

Bench got up to almost respectable this year through lots of pushups, although have pulled back from them now will get back into them over Easter break.

Interesting thread Nate.

I’ve heard the seasons in Europe are quite long, how long has your season been (calander) and how many games?

What are your off-season plans as far as training goes?

Hey N8,

Lifts looking solid bit of work put in since you left here, your numbers were Squat 120kg 264lb, Bench 75kg 165lb and Dead 150kg 330lb. Training must be going well.

Hope Iacapo did not do what he did here the last he was tanked, the truth will come out soon and you will let us know. Good to see he has got a six pac were all still in the mono club ha ha.

Europe for one more year same club or changing. Canes are doing not to bad at the moment lying fourth had a bye this weekend. But can’t wait for NPC bit of decent rucking, tito and rodney got 1 week off for rucking??? about round 3 just before the trip to south africa. Tri Nations is three matches now so the season is getting longer they are talking about monday thursday games who knows.

Keep up the training.

In Strength
Warren

ps thanks for the gym plug

Been a busy two weeks here in Italy. Had three games last week, also a mate over from New Zealand to show around, two championship games and also played Croatia mid week.We won all three and beat Croatia 50-12, was very cool to play a national team although I didn’t know a word of the national anthem of Italy, from what I figured the guys on my team didn’t either or they were doing some crazy harmony thing they sung loud and proud though so full credit.

Had fat testing Tuesday strength testing Wednesday and Fitness and Speed testing tonight. Looks like I am eating some raw horse next week as prelim on Fat test was 16 percent. I find out definatly next week. Will post photos of me eating the raw horsemeat if I get over 15 percent.

Strength testing went well, got 157.5kg (346lbs) Squat. Had a mozzer on the bench and only pushed a 95 (209) although had a sore thumb and know I can do better. Not an excuse!! Anyway I made up for my crap bench with a solid clean of 90 (198) also for the first time in my life did a few (4) palm forwards chins. Doesn’t sound like much but for me at 6’10 a PB.

Speed test ran a 1.73 over 10 metres. Had an OK 4.61 over 30 metres.(Best of three on both)Both new PB’s.
Finally on the 6 min run did a 1660 metres which was best for the forwards again pretty stoked.

Ruggerlife,
Plans for next season are slowly coming forward nothing concrete but definatly switching to new club. Fingers crossed that I make Top Ten or good team in France.

Training over summer is going to be sketchy as plan on travelling, will be doing more bodyweight stuff, aim to do 100 pressups. And some sprint technique work. Plan on travelling to Greece,Turkey and Egypt for a month or so and then Spain(Running of the bulls), Portugal and finally Morrocco.
Hopefully can squeeze in a session or two each week at local gyms or hotel gyms. How a hotel can call a pair of 2kg dumbells and a broken treadmill a gym is beyond me though.

Wa (Lastrep) Those numbers were from when I started, My numbers before leaving tested at IRANZ were 90 bench 170 dead and 140 squat.

Got Easter weekend off from all training and looking forward to shooting over to Sicily (Alghero) for a few nights to catch up with a rugby mate from NZ.

Does anyone here think lazyness is contagious?? How does it relate to standing on the shoulders of giants??

Hey Apayne… add your stories. Just change names etc.

Has anyone read “A million little pieces” by James Frey. I don’t care too much about the controversy it’s a jawdropping read. One of the perks of doing sweet FA is that I get to do a fair bit of reading and mostly stuff recommended of T-Nation. Good to get books from similarish (and not so)minds. Anybody read the sequeal??

Rugby books I would recommend,
Zinzan Brookes competitive edge training book.
Autobiographies:
John Eales,
Martin Johnston,
Norm Hewitt,

Also good:
Scar Tissue, RHCP Antony Kiedis.
The new Che Guevara biography. Will find the author but a great insight into his mind.
