I do the DB rows off a bench, that’s right… how do you do them? Stand-alone or supported on a bench? Just wondering since then my poundage would def. go down LOL
What’s your technique?

It’s not even about you being a dick LOL… I find that through the simple mechanical advantage of a bent-over dumbbell row (e.g., one hand supported on the bench, other hand lifting the 'bell) allows for more mental focus moreso than that of the barbell row.
As for form I definitely try keep my form strict as possible & keep my back parallel to the floor, abs tight, etc. and minimize torquing through the trunk area. Amazing how it works your legs too in keeping rigid for form though.
As another poster stated as well it’s all about leverage and body type.
Good luck and keep rowing.
yep i agree. but it is also a lot about cheating with the 1 arm db row. 95% of the people you see doing them in the gym are getting the hard jerk pull at the bottom and then lunging their chest forward 6 inches to meet the db at the top, thus using true strenght to execute about an inch of the lift.

(In my best Homer Simpson voice) It’s funny cause its true… Sorry to get you guys all edgy. It was just a joke. I can row what I can bench raw though.

Then I would say you have a weak bench. If you can stand hunched over, in an awkward posistion, and pull a barbell towrds your chest, and at the same time use that same weight (max)while being supported by bench, pushing away from your body, then something is wrong.

Dude… what is your problem? I am not bragging or stating I’m perfect or anything… geez… I’m just stating what works for me and is what I DO in the gym… You have what, a grand total of 6 posts and probably lurking and you come out e-guns blazing, huh? You’re suddenly the expert? Take it easy. I don’t need your validation or condemnation since we’ll probably never meet in this lifetime but let’s get some things straight:
Cheating has its place in some exercises but previous back injuries make me even more wary and executing proper form.
AND I’ve had numerous people that are somewhat knowledgeable about training watch my form and tell me I’m doing it properly.
You’re right that I probably am not pushing myself with BB rows but you don’t know shit about my workout rotuine(s) now, do you? I looked at some of your other posts and dude, your arrogance and conceit is amazing in your replies to other posts too.
Too bad.
As an e-community we could learn a lot from each other but you just keep on keeping shooting people down instead of contributing positively to what otherwise is an amazing forum that I check daily to get inspired and fired up for the gym.
btw I don’t do incline flyes ![]()
My apologies to Todd S. for venting LOL
hey man, get your panties out of a twist. what you see as arrogance and conceit is actually just me being absolutely dumbfounded that someone would post about how they can practically DB row their current BB row weight in someone else’s post about the correlation between BB rowing and benching. judging by the way the original poster posed his question you would think that they dont have any injuries/deformities holding them back, otherwise they would probably already know that and wouldnt have even asked the question. you however, while you may have had previous injuries limiting your ability to do heavy BB rows, yet not limiting your ability to do DB rows- which i can understand- since DB rows you are supporting yourself by holding onto/leaning on something solid vs. BB rows you are out there all on your own with nothing but your own body strength supporting you, you posted about your DB row being so heavy compared to your BB row blah blah with no mention of any previous injury, thus implying that it was perfectly normal to have a back so out of balance to the chest. now, after having let that statement out i would say that it is perfectly normal for someone to have such an imbalance between their chest/back because newbies do tend to train chest mon-sun and back any other day outside of that. read all that again, and think about it and i think youll see my point. as far as my problem? id say my problem is that i do BB rows with 225 for sets of 6-8 reps and i eat my ass off and im still only 180lb at 5’9". i guess i should look on the bright side though and thats that my bench on rows are close (rowing 8 reps at 225, benching 10 at 225…also bench 275 for 4 lastnight- someone told me i could probably max 315ish, i dunno) so i guess that makes me pretty balanced.
Rows has always been a mystery to me.
I can relativly easilly row 12 reps with 155lbs, but with 175, I can’t do ONE! What is wrong with me??

And you can’t cheat with regular Barbell Rows?

How many can you do with 160lbs., or 165lbs.?
The rep scheme should look something like this:
155=12
160=10
165=8
170=4 to 6
175= 2, 3 or 4
What are some good protocols for increasing row strength?
My best rowing strength gains were from doing Dan John’s OLAD and Waterbury’s VOS workouts. Working rows with regular parameters don’t seem to help me much.
" if im reading all this correctly it looks like youre saying your form is perfect for both BB rows and the DB rows…yet shortly after you “bust through that plateau” of the 130’s youre going to be one arm rowing more than you are rowing with both arms?
here’s a tip: find someone who is experienced in training and ask them to look at your form. im not trying to say you dont know jack or anything, its just rather hard to step back and watch your own form. unless youre cheating like shit with the DB rows, or just plain not pushing yourself with the BB rows…something doesnt jive. now the only challenge is whether or not you want to do this or simply come back with hey man youre a dick im not cheating blah blah like people always do on these boards… but one of them will get your rows moving in the right direction, and the other will set your place in stone as one of those “genetic freaks” that DB rows more than he BB rows. in the mean time id skip your next post about how you can use more weight on incline flys than you can with flat BB bench "
RETARD. Really. Kinda late but someone had to tell him.
