Rowing Machine Routine?

The Wms 4x for GB looked and were absolutely distraught for losing. I say losing because for them a silver was losing. Everyone Grainger was the first gb women to medal three times in a row they were all in the wrong colour.

Yah I’d agree with the GB 4x. I was highly pissed that it was China who beat them too. I just want China to lose everything.

Hehe, although the 19 yr old stroke for the Chinese was frickkin awesome (ergh)

Redgrave pointed out that eventhough the Chinese had a superduper training HQ they lacked the vital ingredient of having “old hands” who could speak to the athletes to tell them what to expect. Which I agree with.

I am sure the Chinese will back for 2012 in a big way.

hey guys…

i know the concept 2 is the king. but our gym only has a Johnstone JAR6000

would their be a difference when i start using my uni gyms, concept 2 model D’s?

i am able to do 7000m in 30 mins at level 5/6 on the JAR6000. anybody have any idea if that would equate to more or less on a concept 2?

cheers
Scott

Sorry scott can’t say I’ve ever used a jargon. Only thing I’ve ever used other then concept 2 is a rowperfect with teh water bowl thing on it. It wasn’t too bad but I hated the monitor and as always everyone uses concept 2 for all testing purposes.

I still don’t think they’ll ever be a huge program. Even though some of those women look like men…

7000m in 30mins is 7000m in 30mins which a split of 2:09/500m , I have an excel split calc if people want it. Were you tired afterwards?

cheers anyway.

i suppose ill find out when i get back to uni.

i prefer the concept 2’s aswell, the johnstone feels like its slipping or something in the wheel when i pull hard during intervals. theres 8 of them in the gym and everyone is the same…

Scott

Yah 7k in 30 mins = 2:09 split on concept2 like echelon said.

Also echelon they have a pace calculator and spreadsheet at concept2.com if ya didn’t know.

I know but I built my own :stuck_out_tongue:

Although my Split + Distance = Time breakdown when the result is going to be <10mins which sucks.

We should make a T-Nation rowing team on concept2 and log meters together see if we can break 1mil by the end of the season or so. It doesn’t count water meters so we’d actually have to put a million in on the erg.

no not overally, but i slept well. was able to do legs the next day and felt normal enough.

went in to row today again after doing legs yesterday, my legs had terrible DOMS and i decided to row to loosen them up a bit. was planning on doing 20 mins and then lots of stretching etc.

after 10 mins i felt awesome and ended up doing 60mins.

i did 12.5k in 60mins at level 5. was fairly tired about 2 hours after but only really in my legs which i think is probably related to squats etc yesterday.

my mate wants to do a challenge for charity this summer again. last summer we did 100km each in 2 days on the stationary bikes.

im thinking we should do a marathon in a day on the rowing machine. thats roughly 42.5km.

whats your thoughts on that challenge and how long you reckon it will take us? im going to aim for under 4.5 hours i think. realistic?

any tips? what should i eat while rowing?

Cheers
Scott

Well the lvl just changes the fan resistance. So you could put it on 1 or 10 and still get the same amount of meters. That being said keep it between 3-5 for longer pieces to prevent overuse injury in your lower back.

Well not sure how you plan on doing the marathon i.e. if you plan on rowing 10k gettin up walk around etc. I’ve done a marathon straight through and did it just under 3 hours. Like I said a lot of it depends on if you’re gettin up or not. Marathon distance is exactly 42,195 meters.

Don’t eat as you will probably vom it up make a hypotonic solution which basically salt+sugar+squash, you can find DIY recipes online. I would honestly build up your endurance before attempting 42.5km (a long way). Try to achieve 15k in 60mins first (2:00 split).

we were thinking of doing 2 sessions of 2 hours and do the whatever is left in the last session. take an hour break to eat etc between sessions is the plan. 16 - 20k the first 2 sessions is the objective i think. which will leave around a 5 -10 k to finish.

we like to do something every year for charity and we all leave for uni in 2 weeks so i think we are going to do a marathon. doesnt matter how long it takes etc. just that we complete it, get our picture in the paper and raise some money.

after my 60 mins yesterday, surprisingly my back is fine and its just my legs that are sore. i think it is getting easier as my technique smooths out. i used to never use my shoulders or back. i was all legs then arm. but i watched some of the videos you all linked and im now using legs, shoulders, back and arms. its smoother and im getting more per stroke and it feels easier.

for the marathon what sort of SPM should i aim for?.. for the 60 mins i averaged around 29/30.

when we did the cycling we simply ate chocolate bisquits and drank gatorade 50:50 with water.

for the rowing we are thinking a red bull before each session, then during gatorade 50:50 with water and bisquits. after each session a protein shake and maybe 30 mins sleep.

Scott

Lol for anything over 15 minutes (unless I’m doing a 6k TEST) I never rate over an 18-20 SPM. For my hour pieces I’m definitely not over an 18 SPM.

If you have to have the rate that high to keep your splits (that aren’t terribly good, not horrid but most high schoolers that row wouldn’t have a problem hitting the splits you are) then you’re technique is off.

Slow the rate, get some recovery, let your legs be your power. Arms and Back are really just along for the ride. Red Bull before rowing = dumb.

y is red bull dumb before rowing?

yesterday was my 3rd time being on the rowing machine longer than 5 mins, so im nearly sure ive a horrid technique and if you look at my photos, you can see im verging on obese fat guy (6ft/20 stone) so i dont really expect my splits to be good at all.

so pull less but pull harder?

Scott

Lower rate, same power.

Rowing is hard enough as it is, jacking your CNS up with caffeine is never a smart idea with rowing.

the idea was energy? especially later on when we are falling to pieces. lol

what you think would be a “good” target for someone brand spanking new to rowing and really out of shape to do it in?

what you suggest i drink and eat while doing it?

Scott
