Row, Row, Row... Your Back

I’ve been wondering about rows alot recently, do you do barbell/dumbell rows in a controlled motion or really explosively. Which way is better or is it a matter of what you are trying to achieve with rows. For example I’ve seen alot of good powerlifters doing them really explosively, like this dude

??? that was weird. whatever works for him

i go slower and long range of motion, btu when doing kroc rows i cheat a little and bust ass

On Dumbell Rows I do them very much like Kroc (minus the ridiculous weight).

In the case of barbell rows, Ed Coan’s technique worked best for me…explosive but full range. I have his training videos from the late 80’s / early 90’s…still all relevant today

Pendlay Rows FTW

I’ve never really gotten the difference between bent over rows and pendlay rows. When i youtube them i see essentially the same thing.

stronglifts has some info about pendlay rows. thanks for answers guys!

That’s actually a really helpful article. thanks a lot. So the pendlay is essentially a bent over row with no leg drive, and you bring the bar to your stomach as opposed to your chest. plus a stronger arch of the back.

I do them like that- i.e. with a lot of body english- but pulled from the floor. These all made a lot of difference fro me in the last year or two in terms of back mass and a stronger deadlift (and bench to a lesser extent).

I’m just starting to row correctly. I did db rows for a while, but not long enough to progress on them. I then went to t-bar rows, which i realize i’ve been using wwwaaaayyy too much leg drive on. Gonna start doing strict pendlay rows and hope my back gets wider/thicker.

Arnold Doesn’t mind a litte (huge) lumbar rounding, hehe. I’m happy he’s still alive and well.

Bent-over rows are hard to master, it’s true. I’ll film myself doing them for quality assessment.

I’ll stick to 45° incline for now with minimal hip drive. I’ll inevitably round the back on Pendlay rows, until I develop better hamstring flexibility. However I like the idea of using the lats to carve upper spine in semi-lordosis for maximal activation.

What’s the rep range everyone’s using on bent-over rows? Good old 5x5?

I usually work up to a heavy set of 4-6. My current row weight is 80kg for 5 reps, semi cheated like Ronnie Coleman does.

I think my form looked good on em’.

Concentrating on slow eccentric? I BB row from the floor with some strong english (I imagine it starts to look like a perverted clean) but strive to keep the eccentric as slow as possible. Seen some good back strength develop from it…

Nice looking rows. Don’t let the purity of form limit your strength gains, though. Use all the tools you need in order to progress.

You’d better squeeze hard at the top of a BOR instead of doing a slow eccentric, at least according to Coach Thibaudeau.
