bench, squat, and deadlift on the same day twice a week? Your friend must need steroids to recover daily from that insanity!
Edit: 3x per week!
Kortes (sp) is all 3 lifts 3xweek. Works well for some people. Alot of the eastern-bloc related routines are like that, Sheiko and Smolov to name a few.

x2
just look at how the norwegian powerlifters train, they train variations of the big 3, multiple times a week and they compete in ipf so they are tested to.

Hey everyone, I have a bit of a serious question to ask. This is in no way trying to troll or be annoying or bothersome in any way possible. Today, I was showing a close friend of mine who is a competitive powerlifter (620 deadlift, 575 squat, 405 bench, weighs 205.4) the 5/3/1 routine. He thinks this routine isnāt very good and it is meant for someone who takes steroids. He says you need more volume. He also said this about the Mad Cow routine. He was also saying that Jim Wendler most likely took steroids because of how much weight he lifts, and it is a little abnormal and difficult to lift as much weight as he did without PEDās.
1.) Is what he is saying true?
2.) Did Jim Wendler take any sort of performance enhancer?
I do smoke a lot of meth. But it sounds like you and your friend smoke a ton of pole.

lulz
āI do smoke a lot of meth. But it sounds like you and your friend smoke a ton of pole.ā
bahahaha, thanks Jim. All Iām trying to do is start moving up a bit in weights. I really like the 5/3/1 program and I think it is solid. It was just a bit discouraging to hear that it wasnāt good from a successful power lifterās mouth. I know all of you are going to think Iām a troll and that is fine. I just wanted to hear some other opinions. Didnāt mean to cause any hoopla.
On a side note, while Iām here, I thought I might as well ask a question about the routine.
I just finished my 1st week, which felt very good physically. However, I didnāt start this routine until Tuesday [Monday I squatted(6x2x315) and benched(6x3x205)]. And on dead lift day, I completely forgot to do as many reps as I could on my last set; I didnāt realize until I was on my way home haha. Should I just restart the week or move on to week 2?
If you read the book there are options for 5/3/1, I found that BBB was, if anything a little too much volume for me in the beginning and the 'I āaint doing jack shiteā was too little volume for me (Jim said this isnāt recommended long term). I worked over a few weeks until I could do all of the BBB assistance work (I found the dead-lift day with the 5x10 squats most difficult at first) I loved 5/3/1 when I was using it, unfortunately I got quite a bad injury which Iām still working around which prevents me from following the program properly.
What routine does your friend do? I donāt think he has actually read the entire 5/3/1 manual. I would stop worrying about what other people are takingā¦

Iāve done Madcow for the past 5 months and itās given me 70 pounds on my squat,35 on my bench and 85 on my deadlift so far. And guess what? I didnāt use steroids. Sounds like your friend has a gross misunderstanding of how training works.
alricht, A) where did you start? lifts that is B) as iām getting tired of bodybuilding programs again, and want some action for the winter months Iād love to know how has this affected to you in a bodybuilding wise? I know this forum isānt about that, just want an opinion of what would happen if switching for such a long timeā¦?

All it takes to convince you that a program sucks is one lifter who doesnāt understand it talking shit? Good luck finding something and sticking with it.
Any program that has you squatting, pulling, pressing, and benching will yield good results if you give it time.
There are skeptics for every workout. The point needs to be do you believe in it, and is it something you can commit and dedicate yourself to. If you do that, then this routine, as most others will be effective. This routine is not designed for steroids. In my opinion, the opposite is true. It works best for a natural lifter.
The first thing you must do is check your ego at the door (as your %'s are based on based 90% of your 1RM). This program is also designed to be used for over a year, so how do you adapt this routine to your cycles? Do you reconfigure it every 12-16 weeks you are on, and then reconfigure again when you are off? The strength gains made on steroids would totally fuck up your %'s when you are off.
I mean, if you bench 300 clean, then shoot up to 345 at the end of a cycle, how do you determine your %'s when you are off again. If you are juicing, this would not be the work out i would recommend.
It would be easy to blast your friends workout and poke holes all through it, but if he believes in it, and he is committed to it, then it will work for him. Although his work rate is insane, and would be a good example of how juiced workout could look.
If you want to do 5x3x1 or any workout, it needs to be your call, because you are the one that is going to have live with the results. If your friend wants to dis proven results, then he is just defining his limited understanding of strength even further than his workout does.
When I first read the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be about which steroids work best with different programs. I am severely disappointed.

I just stumbled onto this thread, but youāre bringing up an issue which means a lot to me.
Your friend has trained only one specific way, and is a strong, award winning lifter. So he assumes he knows everything about lifting, and that his way is the best for everyone. Iāve seen this all my life. Someone grows strong and thinks he has all the answers for everyone. So others follow his advice and get nowhere.
What about genetics? What about diet? What about stress? How much sleep does he get? How does he train - never goes heavy, always goes heavy, what? I bet he couldnāt even tell you.
You need to spend a lot of time with a lot people and study their progress before even beginning to be able to critique programs.

I think the program he has been using is 5/3/1 for hand drilling glory holes.
