I gave my mom a workout program, but after rainfall during a morning session she slipped on a slate sidewalk and landed on her shoulder.
Insurance refused to get an MRI until she did PT. It has been almost 4 months now. They finally let her get an MRI and found a torn cuff that has now stretched itself.
They doctors want to operate. There is little chance of success and they say it will never work as well as it did, etc. Is there anything on the horizon here? Any other treatment options? She’s probably 65 yrs old, but doesn’t seem that old. She’s 5’3, around 140 lbs.
sorry to hear about your moms shoulder, i went through a similar situation recently.
I was playing college ball and i tore my rotator cuff along with a couple other shoulder tears and injuries by pushin myself to hard in the weight room and on the field.
They told me the same thing, i needed physica therapy which of cours just made it worse. This was at the end of last fall, i had arthroscopic reconstructive surgury this past july on my shoulder and thye found a bunch of things wrong in there they didnt expect to find like a tore cuff, torn labrum, and tendons that were stretched so much they actually fell of to the side of my shoulder, werent even really being used.
Im really not a fan of surgury so i was willing to try anything else and luckily i had adoctor with enough balls to tell me that to try anything else would be stupid and would in no way help me. He told me if i let him operate he can fix it, its the only way. the longer you wait the greater risk you run of causing more damage, like did and like it sounds like your mother has possibly done by being forced into pt like that.
I would recommend the procedure, theres no toehr way to fix it, it wont be the same but shes 65, she doenst need to be able to throw or lift heavy weight, just needs to get some stability and that discomfort gone, which if you have a decent surgeon, i believe it will help.
