Anyone ever use it? I just got mine and did some holds for max time with 135 lbs. today. My grip is fried! I can’t say what kind of results it gives, having just started, but based on the first workout, I can tell it’s gonna be a great tool!
Yea, i got one, awesome tool but it sux though, first time i tried it, got 140, like a year later now, still only getting 140. All my other lifts are generally moving, (cept deadlift, damnit) im getting stronger on C.O.C grippers, etc… but rolling thunder is just damn hard. I just think its nuts though, the world record is like 260ish, thats just nuts to me, somebody’s gotta come along and smash that.
What is this rolling thunder you speak of?

I have the HG grippers, which I really like. I just started on the rolling thunder. I’m looking to add more grip toys every few months to my home gym.
is there any better pictures of it? I’d like to make one myself. How is it constructed?

DOnt know where better pics are but im sure you could make it, might not be able to handle crazy loads as well as rolling thunder but… its basically just a big old tube, with like a v shaped metal thing welded onto it to hang weights from and a sleeve around the tube thats also metal thats just barely wider and not attached at all so it can roll. So you grab it by the outside sleeve basically and the rest of it rolls around inside. Think of like one of those revolving handles they have for cable machines in gym, but just with a superwide handle.
Dude I spent like $35.00 or so for my Rolling Thunder from Ironmind. Pretty cheap price for what you get, in my book.
Here I am pulling a casual 135 pounds on mine right-handed!
In case you were figuring I was strong just one handed - think again!
Here I am doing the same with my left hand. BTW, my top lift on the RT is 205 pounds right now.
I made mine myself of a piece of chain, a 1 inch metal pipe and a 2’3/8 PVC pipe. Slippery as hell, sux not having magnesia powder available.
Have only had mine two weeks, maxed out yesterday and got 66 Kg, app 145 lbs. It took me 12 sets before I reached max so I might have a few more kilos to a real max?.
A bit hard when you have small hands, mine are just a tad over 7 inch.
Other grip toys I have are:
Two wooden blocks: 1,25 and 2,5 Inch for pinchgripping.
CoC Trainer, #1, #2 and #3.
A 2,5 foot 1 inch pipe where I attach weights at one end for levering.
Will start bending in a few momth so I’ve started to strengthen my wrists beforehand, have heard it’s quite a high risk of injury if bending hard without proper preparation/pretraining.
Any other here doing any bending?
Not yet, I’m still strengthening my wrists too. Got a 2.5" fat bar dumbbell to attach weight to one side and do leverage lifts. Those are rough. Beyond that I train on the Rolling Thunder, plate pinches, and HG Grippers. I’ve had to lay off the grippers, though. I thinkI have an overuse injury in my right hand from closing thg the HG250. It feels like a bruise inside my right palm and I can’t even close the HG200. So I’m leaving them alone for a while. I did rip my first phonebook the other day, though.

What’s wrong with that effort?

Great photos, inspirational!
what are the general rules for performance of the rolling thunder-ie, how high do you have to pull it, what is the starting height?
Keith
Sratrting height is pretty high, depends on the loading pin you got with it. Mine’s about 18" and I just lift and hold for time. Some people walk with it for added difficulty. Some people do reps. Timed holds usually get the job done for me.
While we’re on the subject, I think it was Chad Waterbury that described a stretch that instantly added almost 20lbs to my Rolling Thunder. If I recall correctly, he described it as follows: Imagine a little girl praying at at the dinner table (palms together, hands flexed perpendicular to forearms, fingers pointing up). Now, do the same thing, only with your hands behind your back. I’ve been using this stretch before any grip related strongman events and it’s made a huge difference.

if you want to dead from the bottom with this you could start standing on blocks.

Good point.
We have one at Diablo that we use quite often. It really fries the forarms! Plus the guys all get off on trying to beat each other at maxes on it.
They had one at the Arnold this year. It was funny to watch all the people try to curl it up! No one even budged it with 90lbs simply because they weren’t doing it right.

Now that’s sad. 90 pounds??
Think of the RT that’s a one-handed deadlift handle that rotates. So not only are you using your grip but your wrist strength as well to prevent it from spinning.
BTW, Erika… what can you do on it?
