that isn’t true. mass is ALWAYS beneficial… especially functional, muscular mass. it’s a lot harder to hurt a bigger guy punching him. this is simple physics. being muscular does not really make it harder to escape submissions if the individual maintains their flexibility.
the old mr. miyagi “size doesn’t matter” karate-mindset is an oversimplification. size ALWAYS matters. size matters a lot, in fact. size can be OVERCOME by increasing skill. but the size definitely matters.

size definitely matters; being bigger does help you fighter better.
but it’s a lot easier to win if you loss weight to fight at the less weight class than gain weight to fight at the heavier weight class.
all these guys are great fighters, and it is not your place to be accusing them all of using steroids. i doubt any of them do, mma fighters have the most dedication ive seen out of any athletes. keep your stupid unfounded thoughts to yourself

judging “users” by simply looking at their physiques is ridiculous speculation…much like the statement you just made.
next thing you’ll be telling us that boxing, track, baseball etc etc etc etc are clean sports with no users simply because the athletes are “dedicated”.

I disagree here. I feel that excess mass on forearms and calves makes it harder to lock onto an opponent’s limb. I’m sure you’ve seen on multiple occasions fighters who have a guillotine on but can’t quite get their thick forearm far enough underneath the chin. THese are usually LHW and HWs. In fact, I feel Overeem’s long bony arms is what helps him win so many fights via guillotine.
SonnyS,
i’ll agree with ya on that…one thing i noticed when i was in the police academy (just like the movie, but funnier) was that a couple of the really big guys were screwed when it came to some joint locks, due to thier larger musclature.
now i’m not small (6’1", 220), but i didn’t have this issue. but one of the guys was about 5’8", 200 and 6%…the only truly natural person i’ve ever seen with 20+inch arms…once i locked his wrist, he dropped. then again, he was strong as hell and extremely quick for a big guy…
Massif, in canada when you’re 16 you can fight amatuer MMA fights, im not a pro, and im sitting at 162 and fight against guys that are like 185 and cut 15pounds of water, that pisses me off more than juice, cutting 7 pounds of water to fight at LW makes me feel like shit so i dont do it…and i just started PL…i wasnt trying to piss anybody off…was just giving my two cents…peace

Dude, have you ever tried to pull open guard against someone who’s 350 lbs? It’s pretty fricken ridiculous. Granted size is not the be all end all of mma, but being bigger than someone does give you an advantage, if the skill levels of the fighters involved are close, then the advantage definitely goes to the bigger guy.
Imagine a 5’8" trained fighter taking on Andre the Giant. How the hell is he going to armbar that fucker? or even get his arm around his neck? As for the steroid discussion, why even waste your time thinking about it?
Babalu wrote:
I take it you’ve never seen Nog armbar Bob Sapp or Royce Wrist lock Akebono or Genki Sudo Heel Hook Butterbean…
Wow, way to argue semantics. Royce vs Akebono. Great a 500 lbs sumo wrestler is a big stretch from Andre the Giant…and Royce is a very well trained jiu-jitsu guy who has been practicing since birth. How about you settle the part where you get taken down by someone is 350 lbs, are you going to pull closed guard? YOU can’t do it, you’d be lucky if you could even get your legs around the guy. If weight wasn’t an advantage in MMA, why are there weight divisions genius?

I agree some of those dudes are obviously roided, it dosnt take a rocket scientist to figure it out.
As for cutting water thats standard practice in most fighting sports. I used to train in Muay Thai and most fighters would cut water out before their fights.

I read your bio too…a couple of days ago you claimed to weight 160 lbs…and since then you claim to have gained 30 lbs…I think you’re full of shit…
here’s my claim about you…you’re a scrawny weak pathetic chump…
hope that doesn’t hurt your feelings.
Hey, I feel so flattered you actually read my Bio. FYI, the last time I posted that 160 was when I first registered here, which was in 2002. I just realized I haven’t updated it when I read your post. Now, tell me, is it that hard to gain 30lbs in almost 3 years?
OK, I’ll let you think that one out first. Hopefully by the time you’re done, I would have gained 60lbs.
But I don’t really have to explain that to you, do I? Or maybe I do.
Babalu:Sorry for hijacking. I ain’t gonna post anymore replies to this dude’s rantings here. He’s obviously got issues. I think the word that got to him was “pathetic.”
First of all you cannot tell just by looking at someone wether they are on roids or not. Secondly I am a former competitive kickboxer and The guys I trained with and lived with looked like Phil Baroni and Kevin Randleman. They did not use any steroids or growth hormones. There are way too many people who look at someone who is bigger, stronger and more athletic than they are and in order to justify their own shortcomings say that “he must be on roids”. Any kind of combat training will cause a mesomorphic body-type to look and perform incredibly. I was accused of using steroids as early as my sophomore year of highschool, and I have never touched them. But I was stronger, leaner and better than everyone around me because of my work ethic. I hate pussies who don’t really train hard and then accuse someone of using steroids because they are bigger and stronger than themselves. Kevin Randleman is not using steroids, he has a tremendous work ethic, and genetics. My kickboxing instructor was 47 and was under 7% bodyfat, never touched a supplement or anything in his life. The only guy of all the ones shown who I think might be using is Bob Sapp but even that isn’t for sure. I have been around a great many fighters and athletes who won’t touch steroids. They train so hard and have such good genetics that some accuse them of using. Well to all you out there who have nothing better to do than accuse those who are better than yourself of using roids…shut the fuck up and train, then maybe you will get somewhere

what’s really pathetic is a guy weighing 160 lbs…
you’re obviously a trademark estrogen user…
hope you enjoy having your scrawny ass kicked by small girls.
And you know that just by reading my post? You’re no worse than what you claim Babalu is.
Oh I know, did I hurt your feelings? I’m sorry. There, are you all better now? Okay, hop along and play with 'em small girls, aight?
What’s pathetic is not weighting 160lbs… What’s pathetic is some people not understanding the difference between “body-bulking” and fighting. Boxing around 160lbs would put you in the middleweight or super middle weight. I don’t think that someone like, let’s say, Bernard Hopkins get is “scrawny ass kicked by small girls”!
PS: For the pro-mass, granted, a middleweight would have hard times fighting an heavyweight I wasn’t arguing again that.
