Rogaine Harmful to T Levels?

I was reading an article at “elitefts” called “Bald Men have Bigger Biceps” and it said that the chemicals in Rogaine and other baldness treatments could be counter productive to keeping testosterone levels high. I don’t want to go bald, and my hair is obviously thinning…what is a 42 year old strength athlete to do? Keeping my T-levels as high as possible, naturally, without pharmacuticals, is my priority. But I don’t want to lose my hair. What are the definitive studies on this topic suggesting?

studgorilla:

I can only give you my personal experience as I have read no studies on the topic.

I have been using Rogaine for about 7 years now and have seen no drop off in T-levels (and I’m older than you).

I have great workouts, gain strength and size when that’s the goal. And I still have plenty left over to chase my wife around the house…

I also take Saw Palmetto 320mg’s per day in two doses.

Give it a try for 6 months if you feel a difference in energy levels, or any other thing that lack of T contributes to then stop taking it. But, I bet the only thing that will happen is that you get to keep your hair!

Best Of Luck,

Zeb

screw rogaine. I don’t want to be commited to spraying crap on my head for life just to spare an extra follicle or two in a vain attempt to keep myself from feeling bad. I just buzzed it and moved on.

I don’t think Rogain will grow hair back anyway. However, it seems to prevent further loss.

Whether you decide to buzz it, or use Rogaine, it’s a personal decision. There is no right or wrong.

Zeb,
Thanks for your response. I will take your advice about rogaine and saw palmentto. Furthermore, I want to thank you for other posts that you have submitted, especially concerning chins. It is always motivating to hear other older fellows geinding it out and having success that men in their 20s would envy. Now if I could keep the hair I had in my 20s I’d be thrilled.

I’ve been taking Propecia for 5 years now. It stopped my hair loss but I was worried about affect on test levels. My Doc says it won’t affect it but he agreed to do a Testosterone level test last week. I was at 479. He said 200-850 is normal so I’m right in the middle. Since I’m 48 this was kind of where he expected me to be. I’d like to raise my levels but I have to do it naturally (Navy Reserve, random urinalysis). One random test doesn’t tell me if the Propecia has any effect or not, but I do grow hairs out of my forehead occasionally.

Those are mighty kind words and very much appreciated!
