Road to a 2000+ Raw Total

Hey! I’m Greg. I’m a 20 year old college kid and a powerlifter. This past Saturday I set the drug-free, completely raw all-time world record total in the 220 class.

Squat 650

Bench 419

Deadlift 645

Total 1714.

The next goal is either to drop to 198 and make a run at David Ricks’s 1818, or move up to 242 and take a crack at 2000.

I’m not sure what else anyone would like to know, so if you’re curious feel free to ask me anything. I’m still trying to learn as much as I can, so comments, advice, and questions are very much appreciated.

hello

Hey! What’s up?

Would you be so kind as to describe your training background?

Started training in 2007. Had some decent success, culminating in a spot in RUM1 and a 1438 total at 213. Not too long afterwards I tore my QL which sidelined me for close to a year. I attempted several comebacks, but would always end up banged up and whatnot. I finally started back in January of last year after about a three year layoff. I muddled along for close to a year and got back to about the point I was at before I got hurt. The last 4 months I changed my mindset completely and decided to stop settling for mediocrity and only expecting mediocrity. I reassessed my goals and expectations and that made all the difference in the world.

In terms of programming, I’ve tried it all (westside, sheiko, 5/3/1, DC, etc.). I found that the program is largely irrelevant, and secondary to the sheer amount of work you put into all aspects of your training (busting your tail in the gym, being consistent in your diet, and making time to sleep enough).

Anything more specific you’re wondering? I’m an open book.

Cool. Where do you train at? What’s your major?

I train at Mash Elite Performance when I’m home over the summer, and at a gym called Rhino Fitness when I’m at school. I just changed my major to exercise science, but this will be the first semester I take any EXSS classes. It was history, until I realized I didn’t really want any of the jobs I could have gotten with a history degree.

How about you? What do you do?

When at school, I train mostly at the school RAC or in my training partner’s garage. At home, it’s Gold’s. I’m doing aerospace engineering and physics (started with exercise science).

Sounds legit. Why the change?

I just decided to go with what I wanted to do.

Congrats on the total. Keep it up. I hope you got to meet Derek and Kevin at Mash, they’re some great guys. Good luck with your goal.

Of course I met Derek and Kevin! Derek moved about 2 months after I got in from school, but me and Kevin are good friends. He came and got pizza with us after the meet (the meet was in Durham and he’s working at NC state). His girlfriend Becca is one of my close friends. How do you know those guys?

I went to Denison for undergrad. I played lacrosse and was a strength intern there. Kevin was an intern at Denison and he worked with the lacrosse team. Derek went to Denison and he’s a huge meat gazer. I just saw Derek a couple weeks ago, he looks really strong. Small world, I knew they were both working down there. Hopefully they were able to help you out some.

When I read 2000 raw total I’m in. Good luck with your training.

Kevin’s a great guy. He helped tweak my squat some to keep me from falling forward in the hole and we had a lot of interesting programming talks. Derek I didn’t know quite as well, but he was a really good coach at Mash Elite. Stupidly strong in the O lifts for a little as he trains.

Thanks! No 2000 yet, but I’m thinking it should be coming.

high bar squats (first rep paused)
135x2
225x2
275x2
315x2
365x2
405x2
455x2
495x2 (PR single is 525. definitely had a little more in the tank)

bench (pause the first one, TnG the second)
135x2
225x2
275x2
315x2
365x2
405x2

sprints (mainly working on form for me and Lyndsey, but definitely hard work too)
3 100 yarders
1 200 yarder

Overall it was a good day. Weights still feel heavy, but they’re moving well again. My CNS is finally starting to recover from the meet and the trip I think.

Training from today, plus a story and my thoughts on gun control: http://gregnuckols.wordpress.com/2012/08/18/training-and-a-storythoughts-about-gun-control/

Snatch/klokov press
45x3/3
95x3/3
115x3/3
135x3/3
145x3/3
155x3/1
165x1/1
175x1/1
185x1/miss

DB triceps extensions/seated DB curl
30 3x10/10
SS
Good morning (mostly to stretch my hamstrings)
95 3x10

sprints
200x3

Good day today. My PR on Klokov press was 135 not long ago, so I’m pretty thrilled with 175 today. Without all the snatches prior, I may have been able to grind out 185, but I was fairly fatigued when I got to it. Everything else was just to work on some weaknesses and loosen up a bit. Running felt better today. As I do more of it, my hips are really loosening up and I feel my stride length and top-end speed coming back (I ran a 4.7 in high school. Not blazing, but I was fairly fast for a large white kid). Lyndsey and I are tentatively kicking around the idea of trying out for the US bobsled team, so I want to get my speed back just in case we decide to go through with it. Plus, running fast and feeling athletic are just a good feelings.
