Reverse Deadlift, What the Hell?...

lol thought at first this was going to be a barbell hack squat the way he set up … then he pulled off some crazy ass move. Probably not something I would do … seems like you’d be more concerned with balance as opposed to lifting the weight. Probably great for a lot of athletes however.

I’ll just stick to my hanging leg raises and cable crunches

It looks like a Sissy squat.

wtf?!

I want to punch that guy with a shit-smeared apple fritter.

Exactly my thoughts. Keep a straight torso and that is a sissy squat.

I’m not sure what exactly it is…

But I will say I recognize the trainer as one of the head trainers at Parisi speed school, which is used extensively by many elite (read-NFL top ten picks) athletes, so I would err on the side of him knowing what’s up.

Apologies if it was mentioned in the video, but I couldn’t stand the guy’s voice. What sort of “olympic trial winner” might this guy be…? Ah well shouldn’t be bashing the guy. He probably just wants some exposure so he participated in this… video.

How would Charles Poliquin name this excercise???
heels elevated BB sissy squat with an overarched back??

Why is this in the BBing forum?

He’s an athlete, not a bodybuilder. For all anyone knows, this is why he’s great at throwing a javelin (or whatever he does, I thought that’s what the video said).

javelin thrower.
excercise looks similar to the position a javelin thrower would get in to before launching the javelin. (why is this in the bodybuilding forum?)

Seriously though. I used to throw jav and I can see how this exercise would help. Yes, it looks ridiculous, get over it.

Yeah maybe this is in the wrong section, sorry my bad.

Isn’t this gonna mess up someones back by doing this though?
Massive compression of the spine like that can’t be healthy surely, knees must get raped pretty bad too.
All in all it looks like a completely unnatural akward movement.

On first thought it seems dangerous but then when one thinks of it, how many people ever hurt their back by bending backwards? Not sideways or forwards but truly backwards? Most human motion is frontbending which puts pressure on the disks of the spine, big time in multiple weightlifting movements like back squats, deadlifts or bent over rows. Or frontbending flexibility exercises like reaching for the toes which many experts recommend against. People cringe at backbending but it’s actually considered therapeutic for the ailments caused by frontbending in contortion as well as weights.

that’s Martin Rooney, if anyone wants to question the guy or the results he gets with athletes, you might want to shut your mouth now, lol.

Ok, holy crap. After watching, I can see why there are some comments like that here, but it does help to know the trainer’s history such as Martin. But, yikes.

Since I doubt the athlete would be doing this using maximal effort weight (but would rather focus on speed and power), are there any serious risks in injuring the back? It looks pretty transferable.

This is basically an interesting variation of an anterior chain movement pattern which differs from the typical prone planking modalities. I would venture to say that with proper firing of the glutes, transversus abdominis and internal obliques, the hyperextension-induced shearing forces on the spine can be mitigated to a certain extent.

im not here to suck martin rooney’s dick, but the guy knows his shit, and though it looks crazy, is it really crazier than say glute bridges? or any of the other glute activation/strengthen exercises we’ve had on this site, which extend the back in a similar way.

I’d say if the hyperextension is not too excessive, and you don’t have a back problem, then why not? Seems like it would burn the shit out of the quads. Like others have said, Martin Rooney knows his stuff.

Also - it’s in the BB forum because where else is it going to be put? It is more applicable here than in the PLifting/Oly lifting forum.
