hey guys,
i was messing around on the bench yesterday and decided to try some reverse grip bench press for the first time. i started doing singles for fun and got 295x1 pretty easy. my normal bench max is 315x1 and im starting to think my reverse is stronger(or could become stronger) than my conventional even though ive never trained it.
just wondering why it might be stronger and is it allowed in competitions.
thanks
btw bw 185-190

He used a REVERSE grip to hit 500lbs at a meet? Are you serious? Like… with his palms toward his face?
That being the definition of reverse grip, yes.
If I am not mistaken, 100% RAW allows it as well.
Ya I know exactly what it is. It was just mind blowing to me that people do that at meets. I was not aware anyone’s reverse grip was better than normal. In fact I always thought it was like a bullshit exercise. Mind = blown.
I think Anthony Clark did a reverse grip bench with 800 lbs (and a few bench shirts) way back when. I would think it indicates that you are much stronger when tucked which is lats and triceps, it might also reduce the ROM for some people. Obviously need strong wrists to move heavy weight. The stricter feds might nail you for bringing the bar too low if it goes on your belly.

He got 470 in a meet and just missed 485 but he did get 500 in the gym. Meat’s regular bench is a little above 500 but I still think the 500 reverse grip is one of the most impressive video’s I’ve seen.
On a semi-related note, why don’t we see the army of assholes in these threads that we see in every false-grip thread that has ever existed? One would think a reverse-grip is about as dangerous as benching exercises get, but I guess it’s not fashionable enough to bitch about. Also, I like it a lot and would do it if it didn’t hurt my shoulder so damn much.
