All I’m saying is that I do not possess above average intelligence. I’m not stupid, but I’m not above average. That’s all.
I have no doubt that someone stupid would not have had the same success. I also believe someone with higher intelligence wouldn’t either if he wasn’t given the same kind of motivation as me.
Do you see my point? It’s not an innate “talent” .
You can call it a character trait that was suitable for this. Maybe I was born more mentally resilient than others? You can call a lot things that happeed “luck”. There are so many contributory factors.
You see what I mean? This isn’t about intellect. This is more on an individual’s character. If you had lived my life, you’d be even WORSE OFF if what you described adversely affected your chance of success DESPITE you stating that you have above average intelligence.
You say you were "Intellectually neglected? My dad tried so hard to convince me I was not smart enough to make it anywhere else so I wouldn’t be rebellious and join him to work in his factory. he passively aggressively called me stupid for months.
You gotta understand this about Chinese culture. Intelligence isn’t respected unless you’re a fucking genius like Laozi. GRADES ARE because they lead to higher STATUS(see the Imperial Exams). That’s what you guys seem to get wrong.
It’s the OPPOSITE. An intelligent person without status is too smart to be trusted.
And I’m gonna be blunt here so please forgive me.
Years ago, my granduncle came to me to ask me to dissuade his son from signing up for a Commando Unit in the military. He couldn’t, but he knew it was worthless for a future career in the private sector and because he used to be a major and his son wouldn’t be able to handle the physical training. The kid was convinced the training would toughen him up and he’d adapt.
I refused, stating that I wouldn’t even be able to convince my own brother, who was his age at the time.
His son dropped out after a week.
My point is YOU wouldn’t be able to handle my life since you’ve written how prone to depression you were earlier in life. You may think I got touch because of my upbringing, but it’s more of I got tough BOTH because of my upbringing AND I was able to handle the shit.
I am very sure you wouldn’t be able to. You know what other kids who had a similar up bringing did? They joined gangs or went on drugs. Females would engage in gang bangs and become whores. Some were a lot fucking smarter than me.
And as you’ve stated, this isn’t about intelligence. This is about mental resilience. If you want to call that an innate “talent”, ok, but then I’d have to go further into why I developed it in another post.
Dude I’m telling you, I know my own intelligence level because I know how much I don’t know, what I can’t comprehend that others can(I could NEVER be an engineer) and lots of people I speak to still make me feel stupid.
That would put him in at least the 84th percentile.
That is a sign of intelligence. A quote I like by Bertrand Russell: “The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.”
If you look up the Dunning Kruger study, it confirms the quote by Russell.
It’s more of a sign of being more well read and exposed to different opinions and subjects IMO.
The Dunning Kuger thing is accurate, but what we’re seeing particularly in the roid forum are idiots with really low intelligence who think they’re smart.
Dunning Kruger was focused on competence not intelligence TBF. That is more what I am talking about. In your posts, you are smart enough to stay in your lane, so you sound knowledgeable. You also are willing to concede when shown incorrect, which is also a sign that at least you are not a fool.
BTW, if you seem normal (average) in a professional setting, you are likely more intelligent than average person.
Look, I picked up basic python as a programming language since more clients are asking for IT related stuff in projects so I needed to know at least one relative one to pick up the various jargon. Then I tried Java and realized this shit is harder than anything I’ve ever studied by 2-3 times. CS grads here must all be fucking geniuses if we were to simply go by education since their main coding language is Java for 4 years.
IIRC you and @loppar are engineers? I would never be able to study what you did even with a heavy math background. There’s a point where it’s not even about hard work anymore. The subject I studied was relatively easy compared to this.
Even F and A math are highly dependant on your willingness to practice like hell even if you’re not smart naturally in order to get good grades, Stuff like CS is a diffent animal altogether.
Then you should get that I am not being humble or acting like I’m such a badass I worked 14 hour days for years because I don’t have above average intelligence.
