Recovery from Jaw Surgery

I am scheduled to have lower jaw surgery to correct a severe overbite in six months. Has anyone had a similar surgery? My doctor said to wait four to six weeks before resuming any hard physical activity. Is this enough time to wait before attempting any heavy training? Is there anything I can do to hold on to as much strength and muscle as possible while recovering? Thanks

You don’t need your jaw to lift weights!!

But seriously I dunno never been in the situation. In your place, I’d just listen to what the doc says.

Losing weight may be a your biggest problem. I’m guessing over the those weeks, you should make the blender your new best friend.

My dentist told me I had an overbite too, and he told me the same thing he told you. I said No thanks.

I couldn’t handle drinking through a straw for 2 months.

I actually had this same surgery a couple of years ago… In my case it involved cutting the jawbone on both sides to reposition and move it forward (this surgery is called a bi-lateral sagital split I think…) Also did some work on my chin…

I don’t remember much of the first week (drugs are great!) and the second week was pretty tough, but after that I was able to eat pretty much normally…

I did lose nearly 20 pounds overall (a lot of it was due to dehydration I think…), but was able to recover it quickly…once I started eating and training again. The big thing is that when you do get to begin training you will not want to clench your jaws or hold your breath… Kind of tough, but do-able…

This is considered a serious surgery, but in my case the results were definitely worth it. Would I do it again? Definitely!

One note to remember: Vegetable-Beef soup run through a blender looks and tastes exactly like puke!

Hope this helps…
