Great that you started training. Post your diet and your exercise routine if you want to get specific advice on how to grow.

Routine - sl 5x5 since a month and a half. Had to get my numbers and strength up. So thats 3 days i week. I recently started working calves and abs on off day/s if i feel that I can recover for the next workout.

No specific as such but little something like this …

Breakfast - 4 eggs, 2 slices whole grain, 2 small banana with little milk.
Mid afternoon - some mixed nuts or fruits.
Lunch - a plate of rice(white or brown) with some chicken or 2 pieces of fish or some pork, maybe lentils(many kinds).
Pre workout(sometimes) - cup coffee with dates/ sugarcane juice.
Post - banana, milk, water, dates. recentl started eating a portion of chicken breast with cheese and bread.
Dinner - pretty much like lunch but a little less on the carbs.
And cheat meals somewhere in between these meals( biscuits, chocolate, basically something sweet)

Your breakfast, lunch and dinner are fine. I’d try to get some protein and in your snacks too, you should not be having cheat meals with no protein. At least have a big glass of milk with your cookies, lol. I’m not one to worry about eating “clean”, but I don’t eat a snickers bar alone thinking it’s going to help me build muscle.

Bodybuilding is really simple, but not easy. Eat enough calories with enough protein to see your scale weight steadily increase, and at the same time get stronger. How much has your lifts increased since you started?

It’s really hard to evaluate you at this time. Very few people look like they lift after 4 mo and we have nothing to compare it to. That being said, gaining 9lbs in 4 mo is perhaps a little slower than optimal for someone just starting out. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. The fact that you’re gaining at all puts you ahead of 90% of the schmucks in the gym, anyway.

I’d just continue to focus on building your numbers up. You’ve chosen a basic strength program anyway, which aren’t known for being ideal for creating a balanced physique. Better to worry about that later, when you’ve built up a solid base of strength and muscle.

I like the idea about the milk! well, week 1(KGS) -
Squat - 40 DL - 80 OHP - 26 Bench - 40 Bent over Row - 40
doing Week - 6
Squat - 88 DL - 114 OHP - 38 Bench - 53 Bent over row - 50
So 48 kilos increase in squat. DL - 34 OHP - 12 Bench - 13 Row - 10
The weight is excluding the barbell. the Trainer says its 10 kilos.

Yeah I was doing 2 months of split routine. And gained around 3 pounds and decided to strength train. Most weight gained from when I started strength training. Agree with the numbers principle.

You should be adding weight to the bar every single workout at your stage. Eat enough to make that happen! Get a good spotter/training partner. If you didn’t grow from the split routine, it’s because you weren’t eating enough probably.

brandy2431,

You want to be big? What are you doing for the next 10 years?

At 17 y.o. you’re an infant in the BB PL world, but so were some of the best at your age. Hit the Squats, Bench, Military Press and Deadlifts and give it time.

Thanks for the advice quick ben. much appreciated.

I don’t mind being big. haven’t actually thought about the future.

At the moment doing those lifts as a priority. Great overall gains!

My point is that what you are doing is a marathon, not a sprint. Your gains will come even if you do a lot of things wrong, of which you will learn from. Wait until you’re at the top of your genetic potential and try to squeak out 10 lbs on your max a year.

You’ll be fine. The fact that you are here shows a willingness to learn. Now learn to be patient my young friend.

You should give some serious thought to your priorities/goals. If ‘doing the lifts’ is your priority, then it sounds like performance is #1. Since you’re posting in the Rate My Picture section, you also care about how you look, so aesthetics wouldn’t be far behind.

My advice for achieving both goals would be to eat more. You can gain muscle much faster than you have been, and you likely won’t add much fat while you’re at it. I don’t want to nit pick much, but at this point I disagree with Quick Ben on the snack point. I don’t think you should be doing anything to limit your calories at this stage. In my early development, I responded well to high carbs, and even a moderate to high amount of sugar. I don’t think you should get in the mentality of limiting your diet. More will be better for quite awhile.

Who said anything about limiting food? I told him to add some protein to his snacks. lol
