Race to 600 Squat and DL

If you are strong as hell off the floor but have problems come the lockout, should you prioritize rows even if you consider your upper back to be a strong body part? Or is the problem more in the lower body and core. If anyone needs a video for reference, they can check the two deadlift vids in my hub (please don’t flame for the choice of dress). My deadlift has gone up but my weakness hasn’t changed regardless of my upper back.[/quote]

Looked at your video, you also need to keep your arms more straight.

Lockout problems usually mean weakness in the lower back and hips. Rows won’t help this weakness. Do heavy good mornings and heavy rack pulls and really hold your lockout hard for a second or two. If your gym has bands deadlift against them. Overload that portion of the exercise to get stronger there. You may also need to work on your form; if you’re out of position at the start it will be harder to lockout.

ugh, got it, but I didn’t get it…

Shit man I was at that meet! I pulled and squatted right after you in our flight.

Ha, you and your brother right? Y’all are solid lifters, hell of a squat. How’s his hamstring doing?

Thanks. I started doing good mornings before my deadlifts last week. It’s comforting to know exactly what I need to work on.

That’s us. His leg is pretty jacked to say the least, but he is mentally doing alright. He was probably going to elite if he didn’t tear it on the squats, but such is life.

Where do you and your team lift out of? You guys had some pretty strong guys in your crew that is for certain. Hopefully we will be seeing you guys around at some more meets.

590x1. 600 is close.

Hit the deadlift on sunday, and managed a 500 squat. So I guess I’m in the squat race now

Very very nice. Your deadlift lockout looks much improved. Congrats on 600!

Thanks buddy

your 590 pull looked smooth, 600 will be there soon

Man… DL 520 right now. But my squat is weak weak weak… 405. I don’t understand the disparity. I’ve always DL with shoulder width stance so I’ve got a lot of pull coming from the back and hamstrings. Would switching over to training with a sumo stance help work on strength that translates into increased squat?

Personally, I think my biggest issue on squat is the fact that I was born with a club foot which was operated on at birth. However. my flexibility in my right calf only is much less than my left so as I reach parallel, my right heal comes off the ground. I don’t know if anyone here has any sort of experience with a situation like this, but any wisdom would be much appreciated.

You might look into Doug Hepburn’s training as he also had a clubbed foot and was massively strong (760lb squat if I recall). Good for you for squatting at all though a lot of folks would use that foot as an excuse for not doing shit.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I’ve been very active my whole life, its never really set me back… I was ODP Soccer (olympic development team) during my young teens, then All-American lacrosse and received a scolarship to play in college… that’s where I got real into bodybuilding. However, realizing that aestehtically, my right calf would always look smaller than my left (no matter how hard I work it, its toned and cut, but because of the surgery, their is reduced muscle tissue and reduced flexibility) so I decided to devote myself to having a good physique, but focus more on strength. I’ve done a decent job compensating I believe for the issue, but the aesthetic issue is always a bummer for me. I would love to compete in bodybuilding, but just can’t seem to change that genetic issue.

TRT, what kind of shoes do you squat in? You might think about getting some shoes with a little heal lift like oly lifting shoes or wrestling shoes. When I squat raw, that’s what I use, and it definitely compensates for diminished ankle ROM.

I should be joining this race soon, pulled an easy 475 (raw conventional @205) in the gym 5 weeks out, shooting for 500 or 510 in my first meet on Saturday. Lifetime goal is a 700 pull at @220

I’ve also hit a 565 single ply squat in the gym, and if my first two attempts go well, I’ll be hitting 600 at the meet… but if everyone else here is squatting raw, that doesn’t really count for much.

Hey thanks, good idea. Honestly, I’ve never had lifting shoes or any real flat shoes. New Balance 574s always. This could probably also help the deads although those aren’t really the issue.
