I was just posting when I saw you posted this in another window! He was larger than life to me when I was teenager! I actually shed a tear over this–for real! He was an honest good man! He was one of the best bodybuilders ever.
What was the cause?

supposedly a combination of malaria (recent trip to egypt) and pre-existing liver/kidney
issues
but it’s still unconfirmed… and ass hats are having a field day with this
Wow, what a shame. I used to bump into him all the time when I lived in San Diego back in the 1990’s, he was really cool and seemed exceptionally intelligent.
RIP. Very underrated IMO.
he did have congestive heart failure and a severely enlarged heart tho…
you just can’t be THAT big and be healthy at the same time

He was exceptionally intelligent and articulate. I think he spoke three languages. He had two masters degrees.
Ahhhhh shit. That truly sucks I really like this dude. how unfortunate it is to see another pro bodybuilder of his caliber go down. May he rest in peace.
RIP, thoughts and prayers go out to his family and close friends. Only 46 too, very sad. And pathetic that there are people bashing him, the man just passed away…have some respect.
I haven’t been awake very long at the moment so I don’t know all the details that have come out, but while the man was undoubtedly one of the top monsters of the 90’s, you have to remember that he’s really done nothing but bash other pros, as well as the powers that be in the sport since he retired.
In cases of guys like Greg Kovacs, who let Nasser stay in his home before a contest, Nasser put some seriously mean sh-t out there about the guy. In every interview, he had his conspiracy theories on everything, so I guess I can understand why his death is going to result in a lot of bashing.
I guess we’ll see if he’s remember more as a top guy from the past, or just another delusional, angry pro who never won the Olympia.

Very good post. I think his bashing of Kovacs was mean spirited. However, with is faults and all, the man just hit home with me. We’ll see the reactions unfold.
Very fucking sad - only 46.
WAY too young. Bummer.
Damn. He was one of my favs from back in the day. He totally rocked the “power geek” look that I strive for in my professional life.
I have a few training videos of his at home. I was more then impressed with his knowledge. This is sad to hear.
As for how he died I read that it was due to complications from malaria and kidney/liver problems.(just what I read might not even be true).
Either way IMO it was a great loss. Even if he had issues with others.

Agree on all counts.
He was absolutely one of the guys that defined pro bodybuilding in the '90s.
I wasn’t necessarily a fan of his physique, I thought the “mass monster” thing often overshadowed quality, but when he was dialed in, he was pretty awesome.
If contests are won one callout at a time, you could make a good argument that he had Yates beat right here.
I emulated his training style the whole way. A huge inspiration to me and many others. Great man, great physique. He deserves alot more than to be remember as just another pissed off Olympia runner-up. RIP.

^woah! PTD posting in the BB section! Shame it couldn’t have been under happier circumstances.
I’d never heard of this guy til today but looking about he was a total beast.
Damn shame all these guys dying so young.
