CtStGermain, shutting down this thread is due to the fact that we’ve beaten this topic to death. And there are obviously many different views, but two are most prevalent. 1) Those who don’t use number of partners to define someone and also understand that people are going to have sex and don’t use a double-standard approach. 2) Those who believe that women should remain virgins, while the guys can sleep around if so desired.
If that's how you believe, then you go right ahead and keep thinking like that. I don't agree with you one bit, but I'm not trying to shut down the post because of that. But it's obvious that we are not going to settle anything. Because the same two types of opinions keep resurfacing. As for Aristotle et al, I'm sure they were open-minded in their own sense. I think eight is a decent number, nothing to worry about. I’ve read that 2 a year for every year you’ve been sexually active is like the minimum norm. Anyone who has a problem with a number and not the attitude of their significant other is an immature ass.

I believe that intercourse should occur only in a loving relationship for both men and women. I cannot go into entire detail on everyone I mentioned so I’ll go into the earliest of them (most of their philosophies are based on his.) Plato. Have you heard of his cave metaphor? There is man in a cave who is chained up and only sees shadows dancing on the wall before him. That is all he has ever seen so he believes that reality is simply “shadows.” But behind him are a bunch of people dancing around a fire. That is true reality, but as long as he looks forward and is entertained by the dancing shadows, he’ll never be able to break his chains seeing reality for what it truely is. Basically someone that concentrates only on the flesh or lower sensual, animalistic desires cannot attain the highest levels of happiness. I pity anyone who disagrees.

CtStGermain, interesting topic. I hadn’t heard of that one before. I do understand what you’re talking about if we only live for the flesh or sensual, animalistic behaviors. That makes perfect sense. But saying someone is a slut for sleeping with “a certain number of people” is wrong. And from many of the posts, there is a double standard going on. I did confuse your thought with what everyone was saying. I reread and realized that you were speaking of purely animalistic ways. If people did that, there would be many more problems in our society than there already are.

I mean, sure, if you’re off by a couple, no big deal. But sleeping with 30 and saying it’s only 10 is quite a difference. In your case, it may be best if you don’t discuss number of partners and instead base it on the fact that you’ve been tested for STD’s/AIDS. I don’t know how that will hold, but it gets you out of a sticky situation and then you don’t have to lie about it.
