Public (Gym) Enemy #1

It can be hard though. I remember going for a gym pr on squat in my university’s gym. As I was getting out of the hole, this 65kg frat boy pulled up his tee-shirt and was showing off his malnutrition “abs” to his buddies and said, “I’m going to get situation mode by this summer.” This was followed by a chorus of “yeah bros” from his five other friends. Still made the lift. [/quote]

sigh I’m going to guess that this isn’t the best place to mention that I’m in a fraternity… That said, any fratboy who expresses the desire to be like a guido (the sworn enemy), especially one that has neither strength nor an aesthetic build, should be murdered on sight, slowly and painfully.

If you need music to get “motivated” in the gym, powerlifting isn’t for you. Also, I fucking love all the bros in the gym. It’s nothing but pure entertainment. Not to mention that warming up with their half-squat max is just awesome.

I became so much stronger, not only in the gym but in life, when I stopped worrying about what others were doing around me.

I know what you mean by headaches in the gym, Every time I go to the gym there has to be this one guy who always says Im going to get hurt or telling me why my Mechanics are wrong. I usually say to these people, If I get hurt , it is because people like you make it unsafe for people like me. Then I go on to ask how much you lift, when they tell me I laugh at them and walk away.

Yeah Gurbob is annoyingly strong actually. Fuckin guy… You’re pissin this gym rat right here off.

Here’s my most hated gym enemy though:
The super talkative bullshitter. The fat guy who “used to bench 400” before some weird thing happened and now he can’t even though he is only in his 20’s. He also broke his ankle, but came and did squats anyway cuz he’s such a badass. There’s a great explanation for why he’s only going 95 on the bench, and he’ll be happy to ruin your time between sets trying to tell you about it along with his medical history and life story and about the time he beat up three guys at once.

OH HERE’S THE BEST PART. He also loves telling you what you should be doing instead of what you are doing, and it’s always bullshit. “Don’t go all the way to your chest on bench press.” “You need to do more light dumbbell work” I could go on.

I am by no means a beast and have a long way to go in achieving my strength goals but I get stares at my local Box Gym all the time because for one I’m much bigger (taller and mass) than most everyone else and I’m usually the only person squatting or DLing heavy and with an acceptable depth.

I found when I was skinny and younger I had a lot of people giving me advice and now that I’m larger and older nobody bothers me or even says a word to me. I did have one guy come up to me asking if I was using 531 and asked questions about it I was happy to talk to him about it.

One last thing. I was in a car accident when I was 24 fucked my back up pretty bad I couldn’t do much and for 5 years I didn’t. Almost every athletic activity was out of the question. The muscle I had built up before the accident was the only thing allowing me to walk (from the doctor). After surgery I started lifting again and got serious about strength. I will never allow myself to be weak. I pity people who are physically weak.

I agree with this.

I have a gym in my garage but will go to a commercial gym a couple of times a month just to watch people. It’s pure entertainment. I went last night to squat. I always change the catches so I’m facing out instead of the mirror and I can see people watching me as I watch them.

I don’t need music to be motivated but listening to Miranda cosgrove isn’t my first voice for deadlift day. Don’t make me out to be the only person who thinks like that. And I’ve been powerlifting for 6 years so there’s no questioning my dedication to the sport.

I by no means a great lifter but I love it and I do it for myself. I realize not everyone shares that view but I don’t understand why pursuit of strength is villainized while jersey shore wanna be’s clutter around the sit up station.
I’m not saying I’m better, but take your judgement and fuck off. I’m not a “fad” lifter. I don’t do or give a shit what’s popular.

On another note, I love the Dan band and their version of total eclipse of the heart is awesome.

Theres a guy at my gym that also has a go at me for arching. When I told him I was training for powerlifting he said his mate did it and could bencrh 230kg at 70kg and he was world champion (without arching), but he couldn’t remember his name. He always talks about being in a weightlifting club but he still carries on going to this shitty gym (I only go here when on summer from university). Every fucking time he’s there he says I’m doing something wrong.
Oh, and he does crossfit.

The best thing you could do is get stronger.

all this stuff used to bother me a lot but now I could care less

Being stronger/leaner/more jacked than my friends and everyone at the gym feels good, I just let people talk and if I have to respond I just keep it to a few friendly words. I go to this site for the (actually qualified) members’ constant advice and humbling.

It’s sempo

find a 24 hour gym. i just switched . i go really earlier or really late now.

I listen to my ipod just so I don’t have to listen or hear anything else around me

Sounds like a typical university gym where every guy is proud of their 14" arms and the only leg work they do is on machines or quarter squats.

Suns out guns out , don’t the ladies want to see abs and biceps!

I agree I thin the answer is to crank up slayer and keep lifting. Most of tem cat deadlift two plates anyway.
People I ask I like it, I ask why they like what they like. I just do. That’s good enough for me.

453 dead for 3, 181 bodyweight, 66 years of age. This is a vid of Art Menton. He is still lifting. He is true testament that powerlifting can be a lifetime endeavor.

Beef

Sounds like a university gym. Every wannabe gym rat and their grandmother deadlift, almost everybody sucks at it. If I’ve only been deadlifting for a month and I’m warming up with the weight you’re maxing while being 20-40lbs lighter than you, that’s just sad.

Music definitely has a place in the gym, though. Will work out just fine without it, but it drowns out everything else. I find death metal to be very uplifting and inspirational and just goes with working out like ham goes with cheese.
