Protein Causing Liver Damage?

I am 16 and wanted to buy whey protein powder. MY mom found out, spoke to a dietian who said that at most i need around 80 grams per day( I weigh 151 lbs)

if I take more, I’ll get kidney damage etc. soo now I’m not allowed to get anything until my mom gets the articles the dietian said showed how it caused damage. If anyone has any information or articles explaining please post them.

I want to buy micellular casein (for before bed) and BCAA’s. Just want to know if this are worth the money?

Sorry no articles, but some advice:

  1. I would say just eat a ton of protein from the grocery store (eggs, meat, nuts, & milk) while your on your rents dime.

2)Ask your mom/dietician if you can drink milk? Ask how many glasses a day, they say 3 servings (about 24 g of protein and a mix of whey and casein). There you go, your protein shake was just recommended to you, cuz thats all a shake is, 20g or so of whey and casein, its like powdered milk.

  1. If you really want protein (and I am assuming at 16 you have a job, if not go get one) just go buy some at GNC and use. When I was 16 I had all sorts of booze, cigarettes, bud, and supplements hidden all over my room (I have since matured and stopped using 2/3 and only drink rarely) but the point being its not that hard to do. I would never say disobey or disrespect your mom, you are living in her house and she is trying to look out for you, but this is like a white lie having some protein you use, no real harm.

And if i am not mistaken that 1 article they talked about that, they used people already in renal failure so it has no carryover to a healthy person.

good luck tho.

The “dietian” is WRONG!

Here is the article by Dr. John Berardi on protein and kidney function. I’m pretty sure that Dr. Berardi is far more qualified, educated and experienced than the “dietian” your mom spoke to.

Here is another article with referenced studies by Dr. Berardi. I think this one is more appropriate for your needs.

Print these out and show them to your mom and the “dietian”.

My parents pulled this shit on me too man. I printed those exact same articles. Printed a few pictures of Berardi and wrote his degrees in size 72 font at the top and left it on the table and made my first protein shake and went lifting :stuck_out_tongue:

All of those studies that dieticians cite were done on end-stage renal patients. People who already had failing kidneys.

I have a friend who is an accomplished lifter and a nursing grad student who was asked to leave his nutrition class one day after an extended argument with his professor. She was preaching about a near zero fat diet with only about 5% of calories coming from protein and the rest from carbs. We all know how healthy that is. Diabetes anyone?

i was lucky my parents never had any probs with my change in diet to a higher protein one, i think that you should def show ur mum the infinate amount of health and diet articles on this site, and tape up that dieticians mouth

Healthy people generally don’t have to worry about protein consumption!

Anyway, just thought I’d mention that you don’t want to go into this all confrontational as it may sound like you are being advised here.

Sure, print up the stuff pointed to, but just be cool about it and give them time to read and understand it too.

Honestly, at your age you should do fine with the lift, eat and rest philosophy. Just choose your foods and timing with a bit of smarts.

I hope you get your mom straightened out. But if you can’t:

Eat everything in the fridge. Steak, chicken, pork, lamb, eggs, cottage cheese, milk, yogurt, fruits and veggies. Go wild, dude. Make her sorry you can’t have a friggin’ protein shake. Make it your mission this whole year.

Just make sure you work out real hard and not get fat.
